Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR r Dear Iron Co. Editor, Will you help me in search for some, at the present time, ellusive articles? Due to a long time interest in drama I The Editor Iron County Record. DEAR SIR: The recent appearance of Mr. Tom H-ayden on the SUSC campus appears to have aroused more heated emotion than would be warranted even by his controversial history. Now that the episode is behind be-hind us, it would also seem that heated feelings persist even though Mr. Hayden appeared ap-peared to his listeners as nothing noth-ing more than a very concerned con-cerned and a very thoughtful man. While his views are not shared by every member of this campus or this community (the writer does not share them), nothing in his words or in his deportment deport-ment can be construed as being be-ing inflammatory in any way. Thus it would appear that heat is now generated against his views that is, against the very American right of dissent. dis-sent. When Thomas Jefferson assumed as-sumed office as the Third President it was well known that a group of men hoped to overthrow the Republic and create a monarchy in the United States. So strong was this monarchist sentiment that the new President commented com-mented on it in his inaugural address with these words: "If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican re-publican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error or opinion may be tolerated of Hayden's visit, then, those who would rebuke the students stu-dents who selected the speaker speak-er and those who would censure cen-sure the administrative officers offic-ers or faculty members who allowed the students to make their own decisions are, themselves, them-selves, guilty of expressing a most dangerous and unAmer-ican unAmer-ican concept. It is to be hoped that this zeal to silence a point of view is iborn of the intense in-tense committment that such critics have to their own views. It is to be hoped that these people do not advocate silencing those with whom they disagree as a matter of principle. Such a principle is intolleraibly alien to the American Amer-ican way. Sincerely, Dr. Richard A. Thompson, Professor of History and Anthropology Dear Editor, I was fascinated by the letters let-ters from Mr. Anderson and the manager of the Cedar Theatre. It seems to me that Mr. Anderson An-derson does indeed have a fine point for those who feel that 'it is "Naughty" to see X or R rated previews of the upcoming up-coming shows, I do not unfortunately un-fortunately share the same opinion. I feel that these movies deserve de-serve equal time just as the other movies receive. This is an excellent source of advertisement, adver-tisement, and lets me know what to expect when I go see a movie. have made and collected an assortment of costumes which have helped many people in plays, parades and various other presentations. About a year ago a group of people borrowed some of these clothes clo-thes for a production of a musical nature. I failed to take their names and my memory me-mory has been fogged because of being away from home many months to help care for a grandson who was seriously injured in a car accident. I do remember that as the people were considering an authentic old cutaway coat they wondered if it was too small for the man they wanted want-ed it for. They did take it to try anyway. There were two other coats taken. They were made to represent Nauvoo Legion Le-gion Uniforms and were decorated de-corated with gold braid. Ten pioneer type and old-fashioned dresses are also ' missing. Some were conservative but a volumunous red satin and a bustled pink lace could be called elegant. The borrowers may have tried to return them or have taken them to the wrong place. The College and High School costume departments have been checked and mine are not there. If anyone has a clue as to where my costumes miigiht be, please let me know as they are badly needed at this time for new productions. The people in this area have helped me many times and I d hope that someone will be alble to do so in this matter. Thank you Gwen H. Sherratt . 161 West 200 North Cedar City where reason is left free to combat it." Jefferson had Just become President of a nation yet so weak that it counted for nothing no-thing in world affairs. Internally Intern-ally there had been little time to weld the American people into a true nation and dissent was a powerful force.. In the face of these dangerous weaknesses, weak-nesses, Jefferson had the courage cour-age to call for a free discussion discus-sion off all ideas and he defended de-fended agitation in behalf of those ideas. The crux of Jefferson's Jef-ferson's credo lies in his phrase, "Where reason Is left free to comlbat it." This means, of course, that the right to express ex-press any Idea is contingent upon extending the right to express any contradictory idea. It has always seemed to me that any viewpoint has, In the American tradi'tion, right to free expression so long as that 1 Idea does not Include the pro- posal to limit the expression ' of any other idea. In the case Considering myselif a "Normal" "Nor-mal" individual, I thoroughly enjoy seeing an X or R rated movie from time to time. Sometimes these movies are so badly cut, for the beneflit of people like you Mr. Anderson, Ander-son, they mlight as well !be rated "G". In your eyes I might be some kind of a "violence "vio-lence Maniac," but like you I to have rights. It is your right, if you choose, for you and your family to wait in the lobby r in some way wait until un-til the previews are over to see the main show. I'm sure you are aware of the many so called "evil" things in life that have been present since the beginning of time. There is "bad" if you look for and desire it. And also "good" if you make the decision as to what you want, then usually nothing can stop you from getting that. Because of our "Free Agency" and training from our parents, we have the right to make that decision either way. If you and your family do not wish to view these previews no one Is forcing you to stay in your seat. I, however, chose to stay in my seat and view the so. called "Dirty Violent" movies and also their previews. Sincerely, Bill Fredrickson Cedar City, Utah |
