Show Girls State ends iveeli-lonq events The 26th annual American Legion Auxiliary Girls State ended Friday at Southern Utah State College as 350 dele-gates dele-gates and 23 counselors ended week long studies and activities act-ivities in government. Highlight of the week was achieved with the announcement announce-ment and inauguration cf new officers on Thursday, June 8. Carolce Zwick, Salt Lake City, who has served as Girls State Governor during the past year announced as her successor suc-cessor Eva Jean Harper of Cor-inne, Cor-inne, Box Elder County. Named Nam-ed as new secretary of state was Patrice Anderson of Grantsville. She succeeds Jo-Anne Jo-Anne Price of Milford. New Girls State senators to Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. are Delbra Woodland, Salt Lake City, and Janet Jensen, Bountiful. Alternate Is Robyn Butterfield, Logan. The new governor, secretary of state, and senators will re turn to SUSC in June, 1973, to conduct next year's Girls State activities. This year's session has been thet hird consecutive Girls State held on the SUSC campus. The Girls State program was founded by the Utah department depart-ment of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1947 as a means of providing first hand information infor-mation and participation opportunities op-portunities in government procedures pro-cedures for a selected group of high school students from throughout the state. The Utah program has grown to be one of the most significant and educational projects of its type in the nation. "The girls selected as Girls State delegates represent the tcp leadership potential in each of the high schools. They are chosen to attend the annual event at the end of their junior year so that they may return to their schools as seniors and share the train- Activities in which those attending at-tending Girls State participate include the formal election of . city, county, and state officials, offic-ials, following complete . Some 135 offices are filled during the week's activities. Those elected to office from the Cedar City area are: Leslie Les-lie Decker, recorder for Freedom Free-dom County; Sharla Fiack, senator, Territory Young; Debra White, senator, Mabey City, and Janet Jolley, com-, missioner, Lee City all from Cedar City. From Parowan are Jane Dillon, Dil-lon, representative for Blood City, and Mary Jane Halter-man, Halter-man, representative for Cutler Cut-ler City. |
