Show CLAUDE'S f omwwdA S by Claude Ortoi, In the waning weeks of the present basketball season, with State and Church tournaments, tourna-ments, the all-star selections, most valuable player awards and sportsmanship trophies I am reminded of when I was Parowan Stake athletic director. direc-tor. It was in the late 1950's and early 1960's, when the LDS Church athletic district reached from all of southwestern south-western Utah, to and including includ-ing the Las Vefas Henderson stakes, And we came up with a lot of fine basketball teams made up of big rugged players play-ers in the M-Men league. During my term as Parowan Stake athletic director, I Came to know many fine leaders and players. In one of these years the tournament was being held in Parowan. We had a few fine teams in the tournament, tourna-ment, from the stakes represented repre-sented in the tourney. Two of the best were the Parowan Third Ward of Parowan Stake and the Minersville Ward of the Beaver Stake. They were the prime contenders. On the Minersville team were the Marshall Boys, Joe and Tex; the Gillins and the Eyres. On the Parowan team were John Wood, Lowell Caldwell, Cald-well, Roy Benson, Dave Orton, Rodney Bentley, Gale Stolk and others. In those days we picked the all star teams and outstanding players. We also gave the biggest trophy of all to the team which displayed the best sportsmanship dur-in dur-in the meet. As athletic director, it was my lot to choose men to make these selections. To pick the team to receive the sportsmanship sports-manship trophy,, I chose Howard How-ard M. Adams, Warren A. Dal-ton, Dal-ton, and one other, I don't remember, for their knowledge knowl-edge of the game. I gave them score sheets sent out by the LDS Church athletic committee, commit-tee, with a nice trophy. All went well for a round or two then Parowan Third met Minersville, When that game was over the sportsmanship committee tore up their score sheets, and handed the trophy back to with the statement that I had better melt it up. I Kept it and proudly took it over to Fredonia, and presented present-ed it to the Fredonia Ward. This week I am going to pay a special tribute to one of the biggest little men on the Parowan High Campus, Keith Rolling at 98 pounds. He proved to be the star of Coach Don Olsen's wrestling squad and has been one of the best men on that squad for the past three years. He has been .a consistent winner all of those years and has represented Parowan High in at least two state mat meets, and has given a creditable performance each time, although al-though never becoming a state champion. During the past year he won almost 20 bouts and was defeated de-feated only three times, two or them in the state meets. And then if they would have said so, he came in in fifth spot. And this was in competition with the best the state class A and AA had to offer. You did a fine job in representing your family, your school and the community, Keith, and we thank you for it. By the way, Keith has had some fine support from his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Rollins, and his brother Juli-Han, Juli-Han, also his sisters when they could, His parents took time off from their work to accompany him to Vernal for the state meet, where they also al-so visited with a brother Car-lyle Car-lyle Rollins and family. Now we have got to say something about another of our native sons, who has decided de-cided to make riding and training race horses his voca-tion- and seems to be doing a very good job if it. In another story in our section, we are showing this rider, Los Hulet up on a winner at Arizona Downs race track at Phoenix. During the week beginning Feb. 20 he was named the "Rider of the Week" at the track by bringing in throe winners. ,n account of his doing there and some of his exploits are told.
