Show College Basketball Team Downed By Colorado Mines in First Series College of Southern Utah Thundorbirds struggling to get off on the right foot in the 1967-68 basketball wars, took it on the chin Friday and Sa- j turday night at the hands of Colorado School of Mines at Golden, Colo. The T-Birds had their problems pro-blems in the opening game Friday night and fell by a score of 99-89 in a free scor- ing affair. The T-Birds came back strong Saaturday evening even-ing by could not come up with a victory as they lost by a score of 85 to 78 with the Miners Min-ers pulling away from a slim two point margin in the closing clos-ing minutes of the game. The T-Birds fell behind in the early portion of the opening op-ening game but finished off with a 35 point output in the final 20 minutes of play to make a contest out of it. Trailing Trail-ing at intermission by a score of 51 to 36 the T-Birds at the three-quarter mark were down by 22 points 76 to 54 when the T-Birds spurted. Big John Carey led the attack at-tack with a total of 28 points for the evening, with 10 of those coming in the final quarter on five fieldgoals. For the Miners it was Dave Simmons Sim-mons leading the scoring with 23 points. Larry Moore, another veteran veter-an on the forward line for the T-Birds tanked 16 points in the contest followed by Kirt Robinson w ith 13 and Paul Beck with 12, a pair of newcomers new-comers to this year's squad. Carey also led the T-Birds in rebounding with 15 takes off the boards followed by Moore with a total of 12. Saturday night the T-Birds made a contest out of it although al-though they trailed through most of the game. At one point the T-Birds had moved within two points, b ut could not take command of the lead. ' Loss of the veteran Carey on fouls haampered the T- ' Birds in the final phases of ' the game as the Miners moved away. An outstanding performance was turned in by Beck on the guard line, who hit for 15 ; points to lead the T-Birds, and ' in addition had an excellent t , floor game. He was followed 1 by Brent Turek with 14 and Moore with 11. ' ! 1 |
