Show County Officials Study Zoning Problems The question of protection cf established businesses through proper zoning of areas on highway high-way approaches outside of city limits, was the principal topic of discussion at a combined meeting of the Utah Municipal League and the State Association of County Officials, held at Fillmore Fill-more Friday. The danger of haphazard business busi-ness development in county areas outside of cities and towns as a result of changes In highway high-way location because of the In-terstate In-terstate Highway development program, bresents a serious problem prob-lem to all areas, it was pointed out. The problem Is the result of plans to bypass many of the communities. At the present time with highways going through most towns, travelers' needs are provided by regularly established businesses within these towns. However, with the through highway bypassing the towns, the danger of services springing up on approach roads may result !n seriously retarding business within the communities, communi-ties, with resulting disastrous effects on the community. Planners and organization leaders urged each community and each county to Immediately appoint planning commissions to cope with the problem, and also recommended the adoption as soon as possible of a uniform nrdlnarwvt in mntrnl thm altna. tion. Cedar City has had a planning commission for many years, and has a comprehensive zoning ordinance ordi-nance that has been in effect for 15 years. This controls land use within the city, but of course, the city commission has no control con-trol of land use outside the city limits. The Board cf Iron County Coun-ty Commissioners has been studying stu-dying the situation for some time, and will undoubtedly act promptly In meeting the problems prob-lems as they arise. Principal purpose of the meeting meet-ing at Fillmore was a acquaint city and county officials with problems that may arise if proper prop-er zoning is not adopted, and to give detailed Information as to procedures in setting up zoning regulations. |
