WHAT DOES THE BIBLE TEACH THE "CHURCH" By BOB REYNOLDS Owing to denominational teaching, many people fail to comprehend what the church is. There are only a few-people few-people today who always, and under all circumstances, usethe word "church" in its strictly Bible sense. This is due mainly to the fact that people use Bible words many times, not as the- Bible uses them, but as they are currently cur-rently ustd. The word "church" comes from the Greek word "ek-klesia." "ek-klesia." This word was not coined by Christ or His Apostles, Apos-tles, but was in general use by the Greek-speaking people. It literally meant "the called out" and was applied to any body of people "called out" and gathered together for any purpose. The work "ekklesia" is applied to God's people in the New Testament because it accurately describes them. They have been "called out" of sin into holiness of living, "called "call-ed out" of darkness into light, "called out" of the world into the kingdom of God. The church of Christ, then, is that body of people that have been "called out" that belong be-long to Christ. Christians are not called out of the world in a physical sense, but in a moral and spiritual sense. The church, the body of people called out of sin and redeemed by the blood of Christ, is a great assembly gathered together under the leadership of Christ, though each member is still a part of the citizenship of the country and fills his place in the affairs of life. Everyone, who in obedience to the gospel call has separated himself from sin is a part of the "called out," a part of the "church," the "ekklesia." There are only two masters to serve, God and Satan; only two roads to travel, the narrow way and the broad way; only two possible destinies, des-tinies, heaven and hell; and two general classes, the saved and unsaved,, the church and the world. Every responsible person, therefore, is serving either God or Satan, taveling the narrow way or the broad, on his way to heaven or hell, in the church or in the world, saved or unsaved. The word "church" as applied to God's people in the new Testament is done so in three senses. In a general sense it is used to designate all the saved in all the world. It is used in this sense in such passage of Scripture as Matthew Mat-thew 16:18. The word "church" does not always include all the saved sav-ed in the world, but sometimes it includes only the "called out" in a given community, or territory; as the church in Jerusalem (Act 8:1), the church in Corinth (1 Cor. 1:2), the church throughout Judea (Acts 9:31); but the essential essen-tial idea is the same as when applied to the whole body-that body-that it, it embraces the "called out," the saved, in the territory ter-ritory mentioned. , In the local sense, the word "church" is used to designate desig-nate all the saved meeting together in one place. Paul used the word in this sense in Romans 16:5. It is also used this way in Collossians 5:15 and in Philemon, verse 2. Schedule of Services SUNDAY 10 a. m. Bible Study 11 a. m.
