CEDAR CITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS Functional Libraries Are Important School Centers CLAUDIA FOTtSYTH Elementary Librarian Cedar City Schools Educators throughout the county coun-ty are coming to the realization that a well equipped, and well administered school library is one of the most effective means of realizing the aims of educa-; educa-; tion in a democracy. The distinctive dis-tinctive purpose of the school li-i li-i brary is to promote the effective 'use of books and libraries to I meet many requirements in life. It provides indiv idual services to each child through abundant , m aterials of all types, reading guidance And meaningful library libr-ary experiences. Libraries in the secondary schools have long been an accepted ac-cepted part of education, but only on-ly recently In most school districts dis-tricts have libraries been provid-ied provid-ied at the elementary level. Kach j library has been planned so that 'it is one of the most attractive spots in the school. Children, accompanied ac-companied by the teacher, come to the BChOOl library for regularly regular-ly scheduled classes. The children child-ren do research work which has grown out of some phase of classroom activity. They read in books they have chosen for themselves. They take a book home to read. They are encouraged encour-aged to exchange ideas about books, to browse, to sample, to discover the world about them land their own place in it. The three libraries have a com-jbined com-jbined total of 11,500 books. The book collections are catalogued and the children are instructed in the use of card files. Book selection sel-ection is carefully made so that there are books in each area of j the school curriculum. The school librarian carefully selects books to keep the collet i ion up to date and to stimulate further reading and study. Approximately two-hundred two-hundred fifty books are checked out of each library every day. The Children in each school take great pride in their school library. At each school children accept the responsibility of keeping keep-ing the room in order. Commit tees of children remain for a short time after school to help arrange the books in their proper places. The library is the center of the school. By its warm inviting atmosphere, at-mosphere, its comforahle, functional func-tional furniture, its attractive displays, the school library keeps its finger on the pulse of tne school. |
