Leon Lines, field representative for the Utah Safety Council, right, makes presentation of national na-tional achievement award to Chief of Police Po-lice Tony Lambert, center, and Mayor An derson. Award, only one of its kind to be received in the Western United States, was presented by the National Association Associa-tion of Chiefs of Police. "Outstanding Achievement Awards," presented by the International Association of Chief's of Police, for work in police traffic supervision, was presented to Chief A. II. (Tony) Lambert and Mayor Arnold Anderson at the annual an-nual traffic safety convention held Thursday. The outstanding achievement award was presented after a study of the 351 communities within the United States with populations between 5000 and 10,000. had been completed. com-pleted. To qualify for th award the community must have obtained ob-tained 85 percent of the recommended recom-mended level of police traffic supervision as advocated by the Association. Not only did the Cedar Police Department receive the award for cities of comparable size from throughout the US, but Cedar City was the only recipient of a similar award in other catagor-ies, catagor-ies, in the western part oT he United States. Presentation was made by G. Ernest Bourne, manager of the Utah Safety Council, who conducted con-ducted the safety confernce in Cedar City. At the conference, which was attended by law enforcement officers of-ficers and representatives of various var-ious groups of the community, such as PTA organizations and civic groups, Leon L. Lines, field representative for the Utah Safety Sa-fety Council, made several recommendations re-commendations for Improvement of traffic safety conditions in Cdar City, to brlr.2 their stand-ails stand-ails to a l'-vcl as recommended by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. First recommendation was to increase the enforcement personal person-al from the present six men to i nine. This -Is in keeping with recommended procedures for communities of comparable size. Fifth need for citizen supported sup-ported organization for Traffic Safety. Lines explained that such an organization Is necessary to coordinate effective programs with public officials, and to create proper atmosphere of traffic traf-fic safety.
