Show Scout Leadership Brings Out Strong Qualities MY OLD SCOUTMASTER I was thirteen when I became a Scout more than forty years ago. Scouting was new then and a battered long-treasurer snapshot makes clear that my uniform was pretty primitive. But we boys were proud of our uniforms and a smile on the face of the boy In the battered picture gives promise. Something of a Scouting spirit must have caught on. I still remember how electrified I was at becoming a Scout. There was nothing that I couldn't do; no problems too great for me to solve; no hazards too great to risk; for I was a Scout. My scoutmaster was a great guy. Of course by today's standards of efficiency he maye have lacked something. But he had great skill In caring about kids; he got down Inside their hearts. The years went by. A war. College. Marriage and a home of my own. Advance In business. . Community responsibilities and another war. Then one day I was asked to be a scoutmaster of the troop In our church. I put my best into it, naturally. Then my own boy came into the troop, and I couldn't could-n't let him down. I got a lot of help from my commissioner and from printed literature helps and from other leaders. But most of all I have been helped by a crystal-clear picture that keeps coming com-ing back to me the picture of more than 40 years ago when I stood before a campfire and my old scoutmaster took my hand in his looked be straight in the eye and said "Son, we're counting on iu." Yes, we are counting oi( many scoutmasters influencing the lives of boys as we approach the 50th anniversary of Scouting and we want our citizens to know who these "swell guys" are.
