Show City Council Studies Police Protection Problem The Parowan City Council held special meeting Saturday evening eve-ning to consider the perplexing problem of furnishing adequate police protection to residents and business firms of the city, and according to Mayor Howard Joseph, Jo-seph, the problem is a difficult diffi-cult one to solve. Mayor Joseph states that with the recent strike of burglars in Parowan and other cities of the area, the city is faced with the necessity of putting on a night-watchman night-watchman or an additional marshal. mar-shal. But the city revenues to cover such an addition is already al-ready stretched to the limit. This fund Includes the take from a maximum levy for public safety and . money coming to the city from State liquor revenues. The council finally reached a conclusion that the only way to sain additional revenue would be through the levying of additional addi-tional taxes by way of the sales tax, which has complications, or raising the rates on services of public utilities which the city has to sell. Here the raise would about have to be in the culinary water rate, of the city. These rates are low compared to rates for like services in cities and towns of the area. By raising the rites to where they would be comparable to other cities would probably furnish some or most of the money needed, but the council coun-cil is reluctant to do this without with-out hearing from the people on It The Saturday meeting left tho question as It is with further study to be given It at the regu-" lar meeting on Monday night. In the meantime the mayor and council would like to hear from citizens on the matter and will welcome individuals or groups at the Monday meeting to get the reaction to the proposal. |
