Show George Barrus, Gene Butler Feted by laycees George Bafrus, head of the department de-partment of public relations at College of Southern Utah, was named the Cedar City Distinguished Disting-uished Service Award winner for 1959 at the annual DSA banquet sponsored by the Junior Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce Thursday evening, eve-ning, Ian. 28. In addition Gene Butler of the Escalante Valley was named as the Outstanding Young Farmer of Iron County. Two alternates to the Outstanding Out-standing Young Farmer were also al-so announced at the banquet. They included Richard Nelson of Cedar Valley and Norman Laub Also of the Escalante Valley. Selection Commute Selection committee for the DSA Award for 1959 included Albert Al-bert Albertson, H. M. Endsley, Walter Hansink and Eldon Schmutz. Making the announcement announce-ment of the winner in behalf of the corrmittee Mr. Albertson stated stat-ed that lr the final vote the selection se-lection of fiarrus as the recipient recipi-ent of the coveted award was by unanimous ballot. Mr. Albertson complinented Mr. Barrus for his nrttvity in the community and pointed out that he is presently serving as district dis-trict commissioner for the Cedai Breaks District of the Boys Scouts of America, is Iron County blood procurement chairman for the Red Cross, a member of the youth council of the Coordinating Committee, Com-mittee, Cedar City chairman of the Republican Party, secretary of the BNS-BAC-CSU alumni association, as-sociation, a member of two com-mitUes com-mitUes of the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce and he teaches in Sunday School and Priesthood in his church functions as well as serving serv-ing as a ward teacher. ' ' Attended XT of TX Mr. Barrus is a native of Long Beach, Calif., but he graduated from Tooele High School. He received re-ceived his degree from the University Uni-versity of Utah in Journalism and English and has completed graduate work at the University of Missouri In the school of Journalism. Jour-nalism. His wife Marilyn Is formerly of Tooele and they have five children, four boys and a girl. In his work at College of Southern Utah Mr. Barrus Is responsible re-sponsible for all publicity of the school, and carries out and conduct! con-duct! !n MJMnn a itmnor traveling trav-eling assembly to encourage high school students to attend CSU. Mr. Butler, recipient of the OYF award, is manager of a 1000 acre farm and cat Ho enterprise on the Escalante Valley. He is a graduate of Utah State University Uni-versity at Logan. Testing Program One of the factors listed in the final selection of Mr. Butler for this recognition, first of its kind to be awarded by the Cedar Ce-dar City Jaycees, was the extensive exten-sive testing programs that the farming operation conducts. This Includes a production testing program and an accurate gains cost record for the feeder cattle program. In addition to his work on the farm. Mr. Butler is also an active ac-tive community leader. He Is a member of the Iron County Future Fu-ture Farmers of America committee; com-mittee; a member of the Escalante Escal-ante Valley Coordinating Council, Coun-cil, a member of the Escalante Valley Lions Club, the PTA and Cub Scout programs of the area, In addition to a number of organizations or-ganizations relative to his profession pro-fession such as the Iron County Cattlemen's Association. Present Certificates R. L. Gardner, president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, also indicated that the organization organi-zation annually presented certificates certi-ficates of appreciation to Individuals Indi-viduals and organizations who have, during the year, assisted the Jaycees In the accomplishments accomplish-ments of their projects. During the evening certificates were presented to Cedar City Corporation, Cedar City Cham! T of Commerce, Iron County Record, Radio Station KSUB, Trl-State Motors, Callfor-nla-Pacific Utilities Co, and to Mrs. Roy Lundgren and Kay Kay Smith. Bosses of Jaycees were also honored during the evening for their cooperation in the various Jaycee sponsored events.
