Show Lion Tamers Hit Hard to Hold League Lead TEAM STANDINGS LIONS 6 1 .889 ELKS 5 3 .625 COLUMBIA 2 6 .250 SAFEWAY 2 6 .250 The Lion Tamers are only two games from the first half championship champ-ionship In Cedar City National Little League and are assured of at least a tie for that title. Tne Tamers won three games during the past week to be the only team in the league without a defeat during the week. Here's how the games went, Wednesday through Tuesday evening of this week: LIONS 14. ELKS 7 The Lion Tamers took advantage advan-tage of all opportunities to win this contest pushing in 14 runs on 9 hits. Boyd Hallman was the Winning pitcher and Ramon Banks was charged with the loss for the Elks. Alan Bratton also saw mound duty for one inning for the losers. Paul Roberts blasted blas-ted a three run homer for the Lions and Banks and Danny Webster each homored for the losers. COLUMBIA 10. SAFEWAY 0 I Ken Duerksen allowed only three hits in posting this shutout victory over the Columbia crew. Scott Weaver was the loser. Leading Lead-ing the hitting in the contest i was Dale Hatch with a home run and a triple to his credit. John Terry of Columbia also homered hom-ered and Kim Matheson doubled doub-led for the only extra base hit for Safeway. LIONS 14. SAFEWAY 13 This contest went down to the wire with Safeway threatening to down the league leading Lions until the final out of the game. Wade Roberts was the winning pitcher for Lions. He was on the mound for the first three innings of play and Brent Russell finished fin-ished out. Rock Moore was the loser. Lennie Olafson hit his first home run of the season for Lions and Glade Heyborne contributed a home run to the winning cause. Gary Gulliford homered and Kim Matheson led the losers with a 3 for 4 night at the plate which also included a home run. Safeway went into the top of the final inning of play trailing by only one run. The first man up hit past the infield but was thrown out at first base by Heyborne playing right field. The next batter for Safeway hit safely but tried to stretch it to a double and was thrown out. The next two hitters both singled, a walk was given up to load the bases before the final out was made by Lions to end the . game. ELKS IS. COLUMBIA 13 Elks put together 15 hits and scored as many runs to down Columbia. Ramon Banks was the winning pitcher and Dallas Barnhurst the loser. Robert Smith led the hitting for Elks with 4 for 5 at the plate including two home runs and a double. Banks also homered for Elks and Ken Duerksen homered for Columbia. ELKS 24. SAFEWAY IS This was one of the longest contests of the season as both teams scored in practically every innln. Steve Rollo was the winning win-ning pitcher sharing mound duties du-ties with Alan Bratton of Elks. Gary Gulliford suffered the loss and Rocky Moore also saw action on the mound. Smith and Webster Web-ster homered for Elks and Moore pounded a round tripper for the losers. |
