Show Safeway Suffers First Loss in National Little League Race As Second Half Play Begins The second half of play in the National Little League got underway un-derway Saturday and Safeway, which won the first half with a perfect record, suffered its first loss of the season to throw the race into a mad scramble. In the Elks-Columbia game Eddy Nelson and Eric Marchant each doubled for Columbia and Mark Lunt homered and Rick Robinson doubled in the losing effort for Elks. A total of 24 hits were belted out in the Lions-Safeway contest. con-test. For the winning Safeway crew, Ronnie Hunt hit two home runs and Kevin Rowley added a grand slam homer. Steve Anderson, Ander-son, Rowley and Craijj Milne all hit doubles. Five doubles were hit by the Lions, including two by Tom Cardor and one each by J. D. Webb, Kim Thompson and Jimmy Lunt. Eric Marchant homered in the winning cause for Columbia over Jaycees and Brent Blackner h't a double for the Jaycees. Both teams were held to just three hits. Elks posted a 10 to 2 win over Jaycees Saturday evening to open op-en the second half of play, Mark Lunt was the winning pitcher and he also homered in the game. Berry Blake and Bruce Blackner snared mound duties for the losers. The Elks tabbed Jaycees for seven runs on five hits in a big second inning to pick up the victory. Monday evening the Lions op ened the second half strong with a 9 to 3 win over the Elks with Bryce Betenson going the distance dis-tance on the mound for the winner. win-ner. Ross Miller and Alex Shepherd Shep-herd pitched for the Elks. Blain Cowley doubled for the Elks and the Lions picked up five extra base hits, led by J. D. Webb with three doubles. Also doubling were Kim Thompson and Betenson. Beten-son. Tuesday night Columbia showed show-ed its strength with a 12 to 6 win over Safeway. It was the first loss for the Safeway crew this season.
