Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: DEAB EDITOR: In the May 14 Issue of the Iron County Record a Letter to ihe Editor was printed concerning the recent efforts of the Cedar City Beautlfication Committee. The last paragraph of that letter stated, "I am writing this as an letter to the residents of Cedar. Do they disagree or agree? Yours for an Improved town, a former resident.'' And the letter was signed -L.C.M." The beauUfirntion committee 'did not respoiiJ to this letter sooner because we wished to gee if any of the citizens of Cedar City would answer the letter's challenge. As we have seen no printed answers to the letter we wish to make several points clear. First, L.C.M. made reference to i the committee's "first efforts." ' '.The Cedar City Beautlfication Committee has been functioning many years now and the campaign cam-paign conducted at the first of efforts of this group. Second, LCM. stated that "to move dirt and rocks around into a different differ-ent pattern seems to be one of the things that could be left until ;a later date." He wns referring to work done north of the bridge on Highway 91 and at the Cedar aty ballpark area. We say, "Why leave It to a later date?" it was something which clearly could be, and was, easily taken care of through the willing and generous cooperation of Chet Parry, the City and the State Road Commission, Com-mission, and we feel that the "different pattern" which now exists ex-ists is a big improvement over the former pattern. One of L.C.MS suggestions as a project of prime importance vras that the city install curb and gutters and oil all streets Irom curb to curb. We couldn't agree more. The city couldn't agree more. So now that we're all in agreement we have one mall question for L.C.M., "How do we do it or where does the money come from?" Had It been a toss-up as to whether the City completed the street project or "rearrange" the rocks and dirt on TVorth Main Street we can as-aure as-aure you we would have put our support toward the stieet project. pro-ject. As there was no such issue we felt that it was best to do what definitely could be done at that time. It should also be noted that currently the City is cooperating cooper-ating with many home owners throughout Cedar City and principally prin-cipally on 200 North Street to Install curb and gutter with the oiling of these streets to follow In the near future. The other project of prime importance im-portance according to L.C.M. was that every home-owner pull his weeds, mend and paint fences and in general improve his own property. Again the beautlfication beautlfica-tion committee couldn't agree more, but again we ask, "How is it to be done?" We have urged urg-ed and urged that home and property owners cletn up their lots and many of them have, but many also have not and will not no matter how much we urge. There are now legal steps which can be taken to assure that this work be done, and more of these steps will be taken in the near future; but these actions are distasteful dis-tasteful and we don't wish to use them until absolutely necessary. neces-sary. It should also be pointed out to L.C.M. that much has been accomplished to improve the appearance ap-pearance of Cedar City in addition addi-tion to re arranging those rocks and dirt The park has had a lot of work done on it through the efforts of many civic-minded citizen- civic club: rtd Ccds? City Corporation. During the opening week end of the Clean-up campaign many sheds, barns, weeds and old car bodies were disposed of, many fences were painted and repaired and many individuals did extensive work on their lots and around their homes for which we congratulate con-gratulate and thank them. In summary, we do not agree with L.C.M. that the leveling of the ball park area and the area north of the bridges should have been left to a later date. We do agree that the two projects he recommended should be done, but they cannot be done until everyone concerned gives their full cooperation. All of the points LCM. brought up were well taken, ta-ken, but they were certainly not new to anyone who has followed the efforts of Cedar City's Beautlfication Beau-tlfication Committee these past years. All of the points brought out were thoroughly evaluated many years ago and appropriate action has been taken on them when possible. That more has not been done is because of lack of funds or individual effort on the part of property owners. By way of reminder, the 1964 Cleanup and Beautlfication Campaign is still under way in Cedar City and another concerted concert-ed drive will be staged later In the summer to strengthen this campaign. We hope that all pres. ent, as well as former residents '"'dar City will participate. Signed: BMutiflcatton Committee Cedar aty |
