Show Broncos Show Well in Annual Chaff ey Meet The College of Southen Utah Broncos were knocked out of the Chaffey Junior College Tourna-ment Tourna-ment at Ontario, Calif, after the second round of play last week. The two successive defeats In the tournament made It four in a row for the Broncos on their annual California Junket. j According to Coach Petty the Broncos played some good ball on the trip but they lacked a consistency that was necessary for winning In the tough competition compe-tition of the California circuit. Against Compton Junior College, Col-lege, whom the Broncos played on Monday evening, they held a 31 to 26 halftlme lead only to drop the game 74 to 49. Compton Comp-ton Is one of the stronger teams the southern California area this year. Evidence of this fact is that they won the Chaffey Tournament which was comprls ed of 16 teams. Against Long Beach Navy Yard the Broncos fared rather poorly in the first half of play, trailing by a score of 38 to 23. They came back strong in the second half, however, to tie the score up at 61-all In the last minute of play I only to have the Navy put on the I steam in a final splurge to win 61 to 68. On Wednesday the Broncos entered en-tered the Chaffey tournament and lost a heartbreaker to the host team, Chaffey, In the opening open-ing round of play, 55 to 53. Coach Petty indicated the Broncos played their besl game against Chaffey. It was a tight ball game all the way with the lead changing hands on several occasions. Chaffey held a narrow one-point lead at intermission, 23 to 22 and In the last 30 seconds of the game the score was tied up at 53-all. Chaffey had possession of the ball and controlled it for a final desperation attempt at a basket and with only two seconds sec-onds showing on the clock, scored to emerge with the 55 to 53 vie. tory. In the second round of play the broncos bowed to Santa Ana Junior College 68 to 55. Dwayne Colledge, who was In-jured In-jured in the game against Long Beach, got back into the lineup for this game and led the Bronco Bron-co scoring with 18 points. Jim Spencer was credited with 16 and 1 he led the scoring for the Broncos Bron-cos in the other three games.. Santa Ana held a halftlme lead of 29 to 25 and hopped up its offensive punch with 39 points in the second half for the final tabulation of C8 points. Coach Petty indicated that Spencer was probably the most outstanding man for the Broncos Bron-cos on the trip. He scored 20 points against Compton; 13 against Long Beach; picked up IS against Chaffey and added 16 in the final game Thursday with Santa Ana. That's a total of 74 points In four games, or an aver-age aver-age of 18 points per game.
