Show Melvin A. Cowley Wins Coveted Pharmaceutical Convention Award M. A. COWLEY Melvin A. Cowley was accorded accord-ed the A. H. Robbins Co. "Bowl of Hygla" award at the annual convention of the Utah Pharmaceutical Pharma-ceutical Assn. held recently at Zlon National Park. The award, given each year to the pharmacist in the state who has done the most outstanding work for his community, is the most coveted award In the field of pharmacy In the state of Utah. ! Historical Background In making the presentation the history of Mr. Cowley was traced back to his first arrival in this world in the small community of Venice on Dec. 13, 1901. He attended schools at Sigurd and high school at Richfield and at East High in Salt Lake City. His collegiate career included attendance at-tendance at Brigham Young University Uni-versity and the University of Utah. He graduated from the school of pharmacy from the latter In June 1927. In addition to his history as a pharmcist his early participation participa-tion in music as an accomplished accomplish-ed trumpeter was also lauded. While In high school and college he organized various dance orchestras or-chestras and in addition played in orchestras at Mllford, Monroe, Ogden, Salt Lake City and Cedar City. Professional Career As to his professional career, his first Job was as a pharmacist pharma-cist In the Kenney Drug in Mllford Mll-ford from 1827 to 1929. He then moved to Cedar City to practice for anc-iher two years at the Peterson Drug. In 1932 he purchased pur-chased the Pioche Pharmacy at Ploche, Nev. and operated that business until 1943 when he apaln returned to Cedar City to purchase Peterson Drug. He later opened his second pharmacy, the Cedar City Drug, and eventually a third in Las Vegas, Nev. then sold his Interest Inter-est there to open a third pharmacy phar-macy in Cedar City, Drug Center. 1 Professionally he served for three years as a member of the board of directors of the Utah Pharmaceutical Assn., and in addition ad-dition served as president, first vice president and second vice president. He is a past president of the Utah Veteran Pharmacists Assn., is a member of the National Na-tional Assn. of Retail Druggists, and of the Southern Utah Pharmaceutical Phar-maceutical Assn., serving on several sev-eral committees of each. Community Service His service to the community included being a charter member mem-ber of the Pioche Lions Club and its president as well; chairman of the China Relief for Lincoln County, Nev., during World War II; president of the Cedar City Lions Club in 1955; chairman of the Iron County Red Cross for the Cedar City district, three years as a member of the Music Mu-sic Arts Committee; member of the district council of Boy Scouts both at Pioche and Cedar City; 20 years a member of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Rotary Club, a Imeber of the board of direcors of the Escalante Knife and Fork Club, and a 20-year member of the BPOE Lodge 1556. |
