Show Council Awards Airport Contract; Sets Date for Golf Course Bond Bids The Cedar City Council at a special session held Friday evening eve-ning awarded a contract to the W. W. Clyde Construction Co. of Sprlngville for the construction of a new runway at the Cedar City Airport. The final decision came after two weeks of study and negotiating negoti-ating with the Federal Aviation Agency when it became apparent appar-ent in the initial opening the the low bid submitted by the Clyde Construction Co. had contained con-tained an error. The Springvllle firm bid was in the amount of $306,019.42 which was $113,215.93 below the engineer's estimate of $119,235.-35.. $119,235.-35.. City officials pointed out that the FAA has given its approval ap-proval to the bid submitted by the Clyde Construction Co., but that they would not agree to provide the federal portion of funds for other bids in the event the city turned down the low bid. Cedar City corporation had considered con-sidered rejecting both the low bid of the Clyde Construction firm and the L. A. Young Construction Con-struction Co. bid, second low, owing ow-ing to mistakes that had apparently appar-ently been made by the firms In their bidding. That would have given the bid to the Whiting Whit-ing Bros. Construction Co. of Las Vegas, Nev., but at a figure approximately ap-proximately $60,000 above the low bid. When the FAA announced an-nounced that it would not participate par-ticipate above the figure of the low bid, the council called the special session for a final evaluation. eval-uation. The Clyde Construction Co. has two courses of action available. They can accept the contract at the bid price or it may forfeit its performance bond of nearly $15,-00 $15,-00 and reject the bid. The firm has ten days to either ei-ther reject or accept the contract con-tract In other action of the special session Cedar City set a date of Thursday, June 27 for the opening open-ing of bids for the sale of $40,000 In revenue bonds to provide financing fi-nancing for the golf course. It is the second call for bids on the bonds. Only one bid was received re-ceived in the Initial call and it was refected owing to stipulations stipula-tions that were not in accordance accord-ance with the ordinance. Since the opening of bids the first time Cedar City officials and representatives of the golf club have met and the ciy was assured that acceptable bids will be made for the June 27 opening. open-ing. As soon as funds from the bonds are made available the city will resume construction work on the course located northeast of the city. |
