Show Cedar Redmen Defeat Milford and Kanab To Gain Third Place in Region Basketball Race The Cedar City High School Redmen wrapped uj a spot in the State Class B tournament Friday and Saturday with two victories in the Region 8 olayoffs. The victories over Milford Fri- day nightJl-GO, and Kanab Saturday Sat-urday evening by a score of 77-69 77-69 gave the Redmen the third place in the Region standing In addition to a berth in the state, classic. Dixie, winner of the Dixie Pi-1 vision, and the Delta Rabbits, j winner of the Millard Division, j had already won spots in the! state tournament by virtue of their division championships. ' The Flyers of Dixie staged a I come from behind effort to de j feat Delta by a score of 59 to 58 to win the Region title. Coach Richard Hobbs' Redmen showed the effects of tournament Jitters In the opening battle with Milford but came back strong Saturday to completely dominate j the game to pick up the Impor-1 tant tournament berth. Plaqued by a rash of court errors er-rors against the Tigers of Milford j the Redmen still maintained a lead throughout the game. Theyj moved to a 13 to 10 lead at the first quarter, added two points to that margin with a 20 point output out-put in tie second quarter. The lead was stretched by only one point to 52 to 46 n the end of trcc- quarters of play. 1 Bruce Holmes led the scoring 'vr the Redmen with 18 points, however, four of the five starters hit in the double figures. Scott I Nelson came up with 13 and John Black and Sandy Webster each had 11. Fred Esplin had 9 points but was an instrumental factor with his fine work on the bank-boards. bank-boards. Saturday the Redmen In meet-1 ing the Kanab Cowboys for the ' third time this season proved to be a team of smooth efficiency. Scott Nelson made every move in the books during the first half of play to lead the team to an easy 42 to 19 margin at halftime. When the Cowboys attempted to. double team Nelson in the second half, Bruce Holmes was turned lose and between the two they led the Redmen to a 21 point margin at one point in the game and a 19 point edge at the end of three quarters of play. The Redmen were just as cold from the foul line as they were hot from the field, hitting only 3d percent of their foul shots. It was the only department that they didn't excel in wrapping up the third place honors. The Cowboys never gave up and in the fourth quarter came back to outscore the Redmen 28 to 17, but it was to no avail as the Redman lead was too great. Little of the Cowboys added 26 points for second high honors of the evening. |
