Show Kiwanis and Elks Battle for Lead As Little League Season Nears End x TEAM STANDINGS Kiwanis 4 1 .800 Elks 4 1 .800 Rotary 3 2 .600 Lions 2 3 .400 Columbia 2 3 .400 Milne 0 5 .000 Kiwanis Cubs and the Elks Rulers battled it out this week for the lead in the Little .League race for second half honors with Kiwanis posting three victories and Elks picking uj) two against no defeats In the week's play. Columbia posted the only other win of the week with a 10 to 0 shutout against Milne, first half champs, giving them their fifth straight seaback. Fred Esplin was on the mound and he allowed allow-ed only three in the contest. Lee Hunter picked up another home run In the game, his seventh of the season, with two men on in the fourth inning of play. Esplin recorded eight strikeouts. Robert Barrick was the losing pitcher. He was on the mound for four frames giving way to Merril Dal-ley Dal-ley for the final two. Kiwanis' Initial win of the week was a 10 to 5 battle with the Lion Tamers. Lions garnered 8 hits compared to 7 for Kiwanis by 10 walks given up by Jeff Cowan and Brent Bulloch, proved prov-ed to be the difference in the game. David Hair, 10-year-old, went all the way for Kiwanis. The game was void of extra-base hits. A second victory was posted over Milne, 9 to 3. David Grim-shaw Grim-shaw was the starting pitcher for Kiwanis. He allowed only three hits and Milton Stuck! came on in the fourth to finish the game. He allowed no hits and no runs in the final three frames. Ronnie Anderson was the loser. He gave up 10 hits. Kiwanis collected four of the 10 hits in the fourth frame and scored five runs to Ice the victory. The third win was a 6 to 1 battle over Rotary. Stuck! again took the mound duties and he gave up only four scattered hits and shut out the Rangers for the first Il'e innings of play. Rotary scored In the botom of the sixth for their only tally of the game. Martin Skougard was the losing pitcher. Kiwanis pushed over three runs In the sixth on four hits. Elks wins came at the expense of Rotary Saturday evening. 8 to 4, and Lions on Tuesday by a score of 7 to 2. Brent Averett, 10-year-old for the Elks, was on the mound for the win over Rotary and he allowed al-lowed 11 hits. Elks collected only eight hits in winning off Dell Rich, starter and Dennis Whitte-kiend. Whitte-kiend. Donnie Marchant of Rotary git 1 is first homer of the season and Richard Bauer and Bruce Holmes of Elks each doubled in the game. Danny Jones limited Lions to only three hits and collected 12 strikeouts in winning for the Elks over Lions. Lee Stuckl was charged with the loss. Lions left eight men on base and Elks stranded six on the base paths during the six innings of play. |
