Show Funeral Serices Are Held for Samuel C. Mortensen Funeral services for Samuel C. Mortensen. 87, one of Parowan's oldest residents, were held Wednesday Wed-nesday afternoon Jn the First-Second First-Second Ward chapel. Mr. Mortensen Morten-sen died at the Iron County hospital hos-pital Sunday afternoon following a long illness incidental to his age. He has been confined to his home most of the time for the past year. The services were conducted by Woodrow Decker of the First Ward Bishopric who also talked briefly at the opening of the services. ser-vices. Other speakers were liar-ley liar-ley W. Dalton and R. Wallace Hulet. The opening prayer was offered of-fered by Thomas K. Holyoak, the closing prayer by Hugh L. Adams and the grave at the city cemetery was dedicated by Gilbert Gil-bert Barton. The opening song was a duet sung by Edna Brown and Darlene Pendleton, "Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy," with Barbara Jane Bayles at the piano. Other musical numbers were a vocal solo, "My Faith In Thee," by E. Ray Lyman, and the closing song, "A Perfect Day," by a ladies group consisting of Edna Brown, Darlene Pendleton, Helen Hatch, Barbara Jane Bayles and Margaret Mar-garet Knight, with Mary Lyman at the piano for both numbers I; and also playing prelude and postlude music. Samuel Carson Mortensen was born in Parowan Sept. 11, 1867, a son of Nells Otto and Elizabeth Eliza-beth Carson Mortensen. He attended at-tended local schools and in 1887 he went with a group to work on an irrigation system which was to supply water to the San Bernardino district of California. He also engaged In the freighting freight-ing business In early days and later become one of the community's commu-nity's most prominent farmers and livestock men, retiring from this in 1938. He was a member of the L D S church and was a Seventy at the time of hlsT death, and served the church in many ways. He was a member of the Parowan City Council for a number or years. He married Sarah Sophrona Hansen at Parowan March 14 1889 and the resided here with the exception of seven years spent in Circleville. Mrs. Mortensen Morten-sen died Oct. 1, 1940. He is survived bv seven sons and daughters: Albert R., Las Vegas; Frank O.. Vern C. and Clifford L. Mortensen, and Mrs. M. L. (Olive) Guymon. and Mrs. Jasper W. (Frona) Cartwright, Parowan, and Mrs. Frank (Pearl) Paramore. Las Vegas. Nev.; 12 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. |
