The Ricks Vikings Vik-ings continued close behind the Broncos by walloping the Carbon Eagles by a score of 40 to 6 at Rexburg, while the Boise Broncos, Bron-cos, never defeated In I C A C play, took the measure of the Snow Badgers 45 to 0. The Utah Broncos from Cedar City will challenge the Idaho Broncos at Boise this week, and will give everything they have to finally break the boise skein of I C A C victories. Bruce Osborne's Os-borne's C S U team is given the best chance of any team of the conference in several years to upset the Idaho champs, but Coach Lyle Smith has another powerful team at Boise and the Idaho team will be favored to win again. A victory would be mighty sweet to Coach Osborne's players and they are determined to win, and with the right kind of luck may end the reign of the Idaho team. Broncos Win Easily The C S U Bfoncos won handily handi-ly over the Parsons of Salt Lake City, but did not capitalize on the breaks as well as they should have done, or the margin of victory vic-tory might have been larger. Westminster suffered from repeated re-peated fumbles which kept the Salt Lake team In a hole during dur-ing most of the game. The Broncos recovered three Parson fumbles deep In Westminster West-minster territory before they finally fi-nally turned the break Into a score. Ted Atherley recovered a Parson fumble on the Westminster Westmins-ter 20 early in the game, but I after the Broncos had moved to the 10 and a first down they! were stopped. Moments later Leo ' Piestwich recovered another Par- j son fumble, this time on the 10,1 but the Broncos coudn't capital-1 i.e on it. Westminster took over' and moved to the 35 where Prest-wich Prest-wich again recovered a fumble, and the Broncos started a scoring ' drive. After making a first down on th( 25 on running plays. Don ; Keeney passed to Steve Rozelle on the 20, and on the next play l'OTlt Hia Kail in rrr .i.m Urt line. Doug Haws' kick for the extra point was wide and the score stood at 6 to 0. More Fumbles Soon after the kickoff Haws recovered a Johnny Pino fumble on the Westminster 31, but as the quarter ended Wesmlnster took the ball after the Broncos fumbled fumb-led but recovered. Pino sparked a Westminster drive at this point which was stopped on the C S U 39, and following an exchange of punts the Broncos started a drive that brought them another score. Keith Tattersall returned a punt from the 25 to the 30 yard line, then Keeney hit John Wood with a pass and Wood carried to the Westminster 39. Then on two ' successive keep plays quarter-1 back Keeney took the ball to the Westminster 1G and on the next play, Tattersall went over the goal line and the extra point! was added to give the Broncos a 13 to 0 score. Daniels made a good return of the kickoff, but Bill Meador intercepted a Parson pass on the 4.V a few plays later to end the threat. Westminster got another chance when the Broncos elected to try for yardage on a fourth down and didn't make it, but this chance was lost when C S U recovered the fifth Westminster fumble of the first half. The second half opened with an exchange of fumbles, Norris HiSgerton losing the ball to Westmlster, but Atherley getting it back by recovering a fumble, ,and the Broncos started another long drive. Runs by Meador, Hag-gerton Hag-gerton and Tattersall, with a pass, Keeney to Wood, put the ball on the Westminster 15, then Keeney passed to Rozelle to put the ball on the one, from where Haggerton crashed over to give the fironcos a 19 to 0 lead. Parsons Score Just as the third quarter ended end-ed Westminster Intercepted a pass by Don Ray Melllng on the Westminster 48, and as the final period opened the Parsons con- unuen io drive clown the field to score their only touchdown, Daniels Dan-iels carrying it over and Thur-man Thur-man adding the extra point to make the score 19 to 7 Max Guttierez returned the kickoff to the 3f and then Don Ray Melling broke away for 23 yards to put the ball on the Westminster 44. A Melling pass to Haggerton put the ball on the 35, and then he hit John Wood who was downed on the 10. Haggerton Hag-gerton and Melling carried to the one-foot line from where Tattersall Tat-tersall crashed over and Haggerton Hag-gerton kicked the point to make the score 26 to 7 with five minutes min-utes left to play. With time running out Westminster West-minster started a desperate drive and four ground plays followed by two long passes put the ball on the C S U 20 yard line, but Meador Intercepted the third attempt at-tempt on the goal line and raced out to the 10 as the gun sounded. |
