Show 8T The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, April 28, 1985 Security is fact of life in Israel Continued from T-- 3 pray on the left, women on the right side of a screen separating the two. One of the most colorful moments is at sundown on Friday, the beginning of the Sabbath, when processions of students emerge from the nearby yeshivas, Talmudic schools. Arm-inarsinging and dancing, they march in a group toward the wall to participate in services. There are numerous synagogues in the Jewish Quarter; a tour is the best way to see them all. Don't miss the Four Sephardic Synagogues, built during a period of Muslim rule when no synagogue could be higher than the surrounding buildings. They were erected fronx below ground to provide the requisite vaulting interiors. The Old City also contains Christianitys holiest shrine, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The huge structure built in the fourth century, destroyed by the Persians in the seventh century and rebuilt by crusaders in the 12th century marks what is, according to tradition, the site of the crucifixion of Jesus, His burial in the grave of Joseph of Arimathea and His resurrection. Like nearly all of the important Christian shrines in Israel, the site on which the church now stands was discovered by Queen Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, while she was on an archaeological pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the fourth centuryFor Muslims, too, the site is significant; they regard Christ as a prophet though not the last one. Five sects now care for Holy Sepulchre Church Homan Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Abyssinian Coptic and Syrian Orthodox and they jealously guard their turf. Their feuding has prompted actual demarcation lines on the structures walls and floors and has been a barrier to cooperative efforts to restore the present structure, which is badly in need of a face lift. The interior is so dark, it pays to carry a flashlight to peek into corners. Don't be shocked if you are approached inside by a priest or monk seeking to light a candle in return for an offering. What is considered to be the crucifixion site itself a dark, incense-scente- d crypt hung with hundreds of is maincandlelit brass lamps tained by the Greeks and is the scene of frequent prayer services. Beginning at St. Stephens Gate -one of the four entrances to the walled Old City and leading up to the knoll occupied by the church is the Via Dolorosa (the Path of Sorrows), the route Christ is believed to have rosamerchants peddling olive-woory beads, splashy Bedouin embroidered clothing and leather camel d can Join a procession of priests and pilgrims who stop to pray at each sta- bags. tion. Outside the walls on the nearby Mount of Olives are many more sites Important in the life of Christ: the Chapel of the Ascension, where Jesus Is believed to have ascended into heaven, and now under Muslim control; the Church of the Pater Noster, where Christ instructed His disciples Take time, too, to explore the more modern sites of the Old City. The Jewish Quarter, for example, has been almost completely rebuilt with apartment buildings and modern homes and schools since 1967. They seemed sterile to us although we realized they were constructed as part of Israels drive to Imprint its stamp on the newly acquired sector. Part of the old Roman Market, one of the widest streets in ancient times, is now the rebuilt Cardo, a vaulted walkway of chic shops and art galler walked bearing the cross. Along that path are the 14 Stations of the Cross, which commemorate significant events in that journey. Be prepared for the fact that some stations will be hidden. Others, like the Ninth Station Boutique, have been irreverently labeled for new uses. The last five stations are in the church itself. Every Friday at 3 p.m. visitors In the Lords Prayer, a modern Franciscan church, Domlnus Flevit, on a spot where Christ is said to have wept over Jerusalem, the tombs of Christ s Jomother, Mary, and her husband, of Agthe seph; the beautiful Basilica of All ony, also known as the Church of Garden to the next and it, Nations; Gethsemane. Put on your walking shoes for this trek, for getting to the sites can be a steep climb.
