Show The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, April 28 10D i Bandits-Stars- ,! Tops Clouded USFL Schedule By The Associated Press The Tampa Bay Bandits and Baltimore Stars, in victories over the 2 i seasons of the United States Football League, meet in Tampa Sunday But their game and the six other USFL contests this weekend is overshadowed by the fate of the o 0 - league itself. As the teams are completing the leagues 10th week of play this season, USFL owners will meet Monday in Teaneck, N J,, to decide whether to push on with their decision to switch to fall next year or push on as a spring league. They must also decide the fate of the Los Angeles Express, who are being run by the league and may be folded, and do something about financially troubled franchises in Birmingham and San Antonio. The USFLs problems were accentuated Friday night in Denver, where e team record low of 8,207 an turned out to see the Gold lose to the Two years Memphis Showboats ago, Denver averaged 44,000 and last year 33,000, but attendance has plummeted drastically this season. In Saturday night games, tailback Kevin Nelson rushed for 85 yards to lead the Los Angeles Express to a victory over the Portland Breakers and quarterback Bobby Hebert threw two touchdown passes and Novo Bojovic kicked two field goals to lead the Oakland Invaders to a victory over the Arizona Outlaws In addition to the Tampa game Sunday, Birmingham is at Jacksonville and Houston at San Antonio. Orlando is at New Jersey Monday night. The owners of the Bandits and the Stars are on opposite sides of the spring-fal- l controversy. Baltimore's Myles Tanenbaum is a firm fall man and Tampa Bays John Bassett is for the spring, even threatening to start his own league if the other owners decide to switch to fall. But other than that, the teams have a lot in common. The Stars, transplanted from Philadelphia to Baltimore this season, are struggling at But they still hold the USFLs best-eve- r record, 1 over 2Vz years, with Tampa Bay second at The Bandits, however, were routed last week and by Birmingham 30-are wary of more of the same against the Stars "They're the same type of team, big and strong, Coach Steve Spurrier said in comparing the Stars and the Stallions. They like to control the football on offense and have a real good defense. "We face a similar task this week of trying to stop them and play better field position, he added. "What you have to do against teams like Birmingham and Baltimore is force them to punt, and then try to get ahead of them early." Baltimore Coach Jim Mora blames the Stars problems on offense the team ranks second in the USFL on defense. o i 33 o n n 33-1- n 17-1- 2 27-1- 1 C I 31-1- 3 0320030301339 a3SBGOei!I3E) 033303(3310103333 "Our defense has always played extremely well," said Mora. It's kept us in a lot of games and given us the chance we need to do something offensively to win." e Birmingham, the Eastern leader at beat Jacksonville earlier in the season in what Coach Rollie Dotsch calls a narrow escape." Dotsch is most concerned with the combination of quarterback Ed Luther and running back Mike Rozier Luther, who hadn't been signed the first time the two teams played, completed 26 of 33 passes for 297 yards in last week's 0 win over Orlando Con-fernc- 7-- 25-1- 8 31-1- Pro Tel Business Telephone Sj stems 485-110- 7 ticket" 4pisC0UNT SALT PALACE APRIL 2728 9 AM til 7 PM Saturday 9 AM til 5 PM Sunday B This ttrkrt forties W you to a d scoun? on weh adult Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 1 P s)()KPS KVNs I BET YOU KNOW imK m t tm (HU K ll IMim Ini in .i h of i 7 it tihi In''1 t t H ink I n mi unt il Inin mkv took n mi r mk ID I t ut i quit ,lt r nn (In K m m m n u h ( onnn tp d M t mi lor i d n- - until KilU Hu ' iIh m d t i in in i s tin ti mi .m i Is 111 nli 4 h ill IlMnr 1 m out u k lilq t nt in m il!'
