Penny Conger then lined a triple to right center field, scoring Rivas and tying the game. Rainna Ford, a Utah State transfer, proceeded to slam a double to left, scoring Conger and giving Utah the lead. Two of the base hits were as a result of BYUs bumpy infield which permits more bad hops than a crippled rabbit. The Cougars made a complete joke of the first game by pulling away from a 10-- 2 lead with a sixth inning in which 18 batters came to the plate. The Cougars scored 10 runs before a batter was retired. Schoonovers third home run of the contest and Coopers second were the key blows. Utah issued four bases on balls, hit a batter and committed an error in the marathon inning. In the nightcap, Utah jumped in the first inning when ahead Troy Davis and Mike Barnett singled, Chris Shultis knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Mike Moore drove in the second with a single. BYU came back with three of its own in the first as Mark Inouye began his fine game five runs scored) started the rally with a single. Inouyes second inning homer was the only roundtripper of the contest for BYU which is closing in on an NCAA home run record. 2 BYU, now on the season, has hit 111 home runs, and stands in third e place on the collegiate list. Florida State hit 131 homers in 74 games in 1982. The Cougars are nearseason ing Wichita State's in 1981. BYU passed Arizona State (110) with its six home runs Saturday. Cooper leads BYU "Machete Mob" with 16 homers. Brown and Brett Varoz each has 13. The Cougars will play NAIA member Grand Canyon Monday in a single game and meet the same foe Tuesday in a doubleheader.
