Michel had called Meese earlier to complain about a Justice Department brief that urged the Supreme Court not to consider a lawsuit filed by the state of Indiana, which is seeking McIntyres seating. Reagan, in an interview released Saturday, also said the Soviets missed a great opportunity to achieve some stature in the world by failing to offer an apology and compensation to the widow of the U.S. officer shot and killed by a Soviet guard in East Germany. The White House released a transcript of the interview with six foreign journalists, which took place on Thursday. Reagan, asked whether he would meet Gorbachev at the opening of the United Nations session in September, responded. Id be very willing to. "Ive expressed the belief that we should have a meeting and his letter to me acknowledged that and said he felt the same way, Reagan said. The president said he did not know Gorbachev's schedule, but that he certainly could arrange mine to accommodate and have that meeting." Asked what would be discussed if a session were arranged, Reagan said there should be some open discussion about some of these differences, some of the things that cause us all to be suspicious of each other, and see if we cant get some things out in the open on the table so that we understand each other better. The president was asked if the March 24 shooting of Major Arthur D. in East Germany and recent accusations by Gorbachev about the Geneva negotiations mean that the superpowers are In for another period of rough relations. Well, I think it was in keeping with what has been the Soviet attitude on other things of that kind, including the shooting down of the Korean airliner," Reagan said. "We certainly, out in the Western world. I dont think can quite understand that kind of attiNicholson tude." The president went on to say about the Nicholson shooting that the Soviets "missed a great opportunity to achieve some stature in the world by not admitting that this was a most regrettable thing and a tragic thing and extending an apology to the wife and the child of the major, and yes, offering some compensation.
