A second vice president, Gerson Barnett, sold 22,500 shares at prices above $33 during the same month. Barnett reported holding only 53 shares after the activity. IS RESORTS CHAIRMAN BETTING ON LOWER PRICES? - The Chairman of Resorts International reports holding just 8,043 shares of the companys class A common. This total is what remains after James Crosbys selling of 35,500 shares in the open market through the month of March. The selling prices ranged from $42.13 to $46.25. vestN et .Insider filings came I n heavy to the v, side last week an,d managed to . 1fush our sellbviy ratio back up closer sir to the three sells for each buy range. Our ratio, whir ;h Is compiled from the last 30 days of Securities and Ex- ttoange Commission filings, is presently at the 2.87 sells for each buy range. The aver age Is 2 sells for each buy. A lot moc e disturbing was the total dollar vaiue of last weeks top sell stocks co mpared to the top buys. " The tc p 15 buy side stocks showed a ; total value of 125,457,615, while the same r mmber of top sell issues came in at a , whopping $145,444,203. Thfjse numbers come at a time wher i institutions are sitting heavily iflive sted in equities with relatively s ow ill cash reserves. These facts, coud with a dollar fluctuating in a ple m ire volatile fashion, lead us to be- lit ive that this is no time to be looking for home runs in the market. In fact, caution seems warranted , more now than at any time in thu past sit months. .TWO GIANT FOOD INSIDERS CLEAN OUT MOST OF SHARES -Vice president Donald Buchanan sold 6,800 shares in March between the prices of $31.13 and $33 per share. Pistachios Crack Open Lush California Market By Frank Thors berg United Press International SAN FRANCISCO There are so many unusual foods grown in California, where nearly everything from kiwifruit to pomegranates is harvested, that pistachios might get lost in the abundance. But the latest chapter in the amazing story of the American pistachio is being written in the Golden States lush central valley a world away ftom the nuts Middle Eastern birthplace. From Bakersfield to Sacramento, pistachio farmers harvested 60 million pounds of nuts in 1984. That is enough nuts to move California into the No. 2 spot behind Iran, which leads the world with production of - somewhere between 80 come group that has been looking for a wholesome snack that is fun to eat, Squyres said. We believe that. Its not really by design but thats where they fall. Weve been aiming promotional efforts at that specific market. California, the only state in the ..try where pistachios are grown, ..as some 50,000 acres of trees planted, but only about two thirds are in production. The tree takes a long time to bear a nut, Squyres said. Anywhere from seven to 10 years. The variety grown in California, called Kerman, is larger than its Ira pounds and 100 million pounds a year. The overall situation is within eight years we have grown from a nonexistent industry to second in the world, said Lee Squyres, marketing Calidirector for the Fresno-base- d fornia Pistachio Commission. Its incredible, Squyres said. In 1976, we had some 600 acres and harvested about one million pounds of pistachios. This year, we produced some 60 million pounds, so were showing an incredible growth. Still, the average American has not yet acquired a consistent craving for the nuts, which are often dyed red and salted. U.S. consumption doubled from 1983 to 1984, but that only amounted to a jump from .11 pounds per capita to .22 pounds per capita, Squyres said. Pistachios, which used to be found generally in delis and specialty food shops, are now coming into more general food stores. They are still not cheap, but that may play right into the Pistachio Commissions market- Now you can select the printer you want. u (Management 9R) 1- -0 MARKETING 3487 West 2100 South Salt Lake City, Utah 84 119 to change, conflict resolution and the like. They think we bleach ours to get them tan and a lot of consumers will only buy a red pistachio. 34736738IUSERS Pass-Thr- Human Behavior in Business Adaptation with red dye to make the nuts palatable to U.S. consumers and it has nian counterpart, but the major difference is in harvesting technique. They harvest theirs with sticks and we harvest ours with big shakers big machines that shake the trees, Squyres explained. Squyres said that in the Middle East, the nuts are knocked to the ground where they stain very easily.
