One goblet wears roller skates. By Ann Kilboum Tribune Lifestyle Writer Dawna Romney doesnt get much call for pregnant ceramic mugs, but she knows how to make them. When it comes to ceramic glassware, Mrs. Romney can certainly build a better mug. Mrs. Romney first got her hands on pottery clay as a student at the University of Utah. I enjoyed making pottery items, she explained. Her pottery interest stayed after graduation while she was a math teacher in Salt Lake City. I always wanted to get back to pottery work. But I didnt have a studio or a kiln so I couldnt do very much. Studio and Kiln After teaching for several years, she decided to set up a studio. Her husband, Brent, helped, building a kiln in their back yard. In her studio, Mrs. Romney creates action footwear on pottery goblets. She adds helping hands to mug handles. Her pottery work reflects the things hands and feet can do. I like to do footwear for goblets. As I work on ?n individual goblet or mug, each becomes a little individual with its own little personality. I try to incorporate a cupful of humor into each drinking container I make. The creative effort in her mugs is "in the hands of the handles, she added. Her most popular mugs are bride and bridegroom containers. The bride sports a diamond ring and fancy bracelet. The bridegroom wears a wedding band and wristwatch. Also popular is her ski goblet. The pregnant mug has been a hot item. Phone in Hand In addition to newlywed mugs, Mrs. Romney has fashioned a mug with a hand holding a cigarette, one with a cigar, one answering the telephone, one with a cowboy hat, one holding a tennis racket ready for a game. I am just getting started expanding the items the mug handles hold, she noted. Additional sports accessories will be added. And hats. Im just beginning with hats held by mug handles. Her mugs and goblets are sold at the Kimball Art Center, Park City. Her work is popular. I enjoy working on individual mugs. Im just not ready for mass production yet. Including dozens of mugg made for her mother and sister, Mrs. Romney I started adapting drinking vessels when I realized goblets are footed and mugs have handles, she explained. Each goblet she makes How to knit type of ruffling Pat Trexler Dear Pat: I started to buy an By ador- able pullover with ruffled neck and sleeve edges in a sweater boutique, but the $200 price tag put a damper on that idea. I found a beautiful yarn, similar to that used in the pullover, and a basic pattern also much like it, but without ruffles. With these, I could knit something very similar if you could tell me how to knit the ruffles. Susan B., Myrtle Beach, S.C. Yours was a very timely question, Susan, as the leaflet for todays featured sweater gives instructions for making such ruffles. But since you already have a basic pattern and might not want to wait to receive the leaflet, I will give you directions for one type of ruffling. I will give other methods in a future column. To make a neck band similar to the one shown today, work as follows: When you are at a point where you would pick up stitches for a ribbed neck band on your basic pullover, use double-pointe- d or short circular needles for picking up the number of neck band stitches called for in your pattern. For this particular ruffling pattern, your needles should be the same size as those used for the body of your sweater. With these needles, work in knit 1, purl 1 ribbing for 1 inch. Then change to needles three sizes smaller and continue ribbing for inches. Finally, change back to the larger needles and work in ribbing for another half-incWhen this final half-incis comround, inpleted, knit one right-sid- e creasing in each stitch across, thus doubling the number of stitches on the needle. Purl the next round, and then loosely bind off all stitches. These directions are for a neck band that starts well below the shoulder level, as shown in the photograph. For a sweater with a typical crew neck, you would use smaller needles throughout the neck ribbing until the final two rounds. In this case, you would only work an inch or so of ribbing. That choice would be up to you. neeThe circular or double-pointedles are a necessity if you sew both shoulder seams before starting your neck band. But, if you prefer to use straight needles, you can do so if you sew only one shoulder seam. Doing this allows you to work the ribbing back and forth on straight needles. To ruffle the sleeve edges, omit the ribbing at the beginning of the sleeves and work the sleeves to the desired length to the underarm, minus the length of the sleeve ribbing. Now, around the bottom of the sleeve edge, pick up the required number of stitches for the ribbing, this time using the smaller of the two needle sizes. Work down in ribbing for 2 inches with the smaller needles, and then work the last two rounds in the same manner as you did for the final two neck rounds. It will be easier to work this ribbing ruffle back and forth on straight needles before making the sleeve seam. 17 of the she (Because large receives, Pat is unable to answer your letters personally.
