Ball said that seeking job guarantees is not necessarily pie in the sky. Some companies have made similar offers in the past in exchange for economic concessions, he said. Most contracts covering union copper workers expire July 1. The active work force is down to about 7.000, compared with 40,000 a decade ago About half of the industry's jobs are in Arizona. Mr. Baum and a few supporters picketed the downtown office building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints in hopes of gaining an audience with some church leaders. He still wants to get back an tract from which he was evicted last August more than ten years after he failed to pay a note Mr. Baum told the Associated Press he has met Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor in the church's First Presidency, to discuss the matter, but failed to reach agreement. Now he wants to meet the church's Council of Twelve, which governs the church under the direction of the First Presidency The Mormon Church has already made every effort to negotiate with Mr. Baum, church spokesman Jerry Cahill said Saturday. Although he could have been evic ted in 1975, the church allowed Mr. Baum to stay until the litigation cleared up. The Mormon Church paid all the insurance and taxes for the property during the 10 years of legal battles, even though Mr. Baum still lived there. Mr. Baum had developed a plant, warehouse and orchard on the property where his house was located. In 1975, he tried to sell the land to the Mormon Church, but he rejected the church's offer of about $500,000. First Security Bank foreclosed on the property and a holding corporation for the Mormon Church, Deseret Title, purchased the property for the church's original offer. The land is adjacent to the church-owneBrigham Young University. Mr. Baum claims the Mormon Church ruined his processing business by property was telling cherry farmers not to sell to him. Mr. Baum's Brigham Young University. Mr. Baum's adjacent to the ehurch-ownelawsuits have been dismissed from State District Courts in Utah, Federal District Courts and the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals In Denver. Mr. Cahill said Mr Baum's own attorney told a federal judge there was no evidence that would indicate the Mormon Church had anything to do with his loss of property g y ex .oce Me ot tee v0 e i r i Ber- Aonl l3 Loe Goff y 1986 kon-s- to James Ornn and Angie Sne'l Moberry Morried Mane T Lake t Funeral services will be Tuesday 12 noon at McDouoal Funer-a- i Home, 4330 South Redwood Rood Friend may call Tuesday one hour prior to service. "Well wait and see what they put on the table." Guadiana said Magma proposed a reduction in wages and benefits of about $6 an hour. He estimated that Magma workers average $19.50 an hour in wages and benefits, with roughly $13.20 of that in wages. 3-- 6 Decant f gry of twne 0 V OC nw go ,r mot tty trjc coutt teojt'u Corp. Bob Guadiana, a regional director of the Steelworkers and head of the unions Newmont bargaining committee, said he doesn't want to speculate on what the firm wants. "It'U be their show," Guadiana ' re'ere 0 committee, said Saturday. "This is going to be a tough year." At the Phoenix sessions. Petris said, he expects Kennecott to present proposals that the company believes are necessary to resume operations in Utah and to be competitive with other copper producers. The Utah mining operation, which employed 7,700 workers less than a year ago, now has about 200. At a special bargaining session last January in Albuquerque, N.M., Kennecott wanted reductions in wages and benefits of about $6 an hour, Petris said. Although the unions were in a mood to make concessions, an agreement was not reached Petris confirmed that the Phelps Dodge strike, which started July 1. 1983, is on the minds of union negotiators this year. Phelps Dodge has continued to operate with The unions are one step away from being decertified by the National Labor Relations Board as bargaining representatives for Phelps Dodge workers. Despite the cutbacks in Utah, Kennecott still has an estimated 2.000 workers in Arizona at the Ray Mine and Chino divisions, Petris said. Another union team is scheduled to meet here Friday with officials of Newmont Mining Corp., parent of the Magma and Pinto Valley Copper Edgar Ball, international secretary of the United Steelworkers of America and the chief union negotiator. expressed hope that settlements can be reached with economically troubled copper producers without a strike. Strikes have occurred in the copper industry every three years since the including one against Phelps Dodge Corp. that is in its third year. It's not completely in our control. Ball said. This time, it depends more on what the companies do. There are some circumstances under which we would strike. He said those circumstances would involve major pay cuts demanded by the companies without some guarantee for jobs.
