Also there are so many different measures of social and economic that data can be found to prove almr-.- t any point about the 30 million blacks in the United States But without a doubt blacks are our largest minority group, accounting for one in every eight Americans If every single Canadian moved to the United States they would fall about 5 million persons short of the black population already here. By the year 2000 blacks in the United States are expected to number about 36 million The Census Bureau projects the black population in the United States to increase 16 percent during the next decade while whites will grow at a rale of only 7 percent F'art of the reason for this is that the white population is Black Population 1980- - 2000 U.S. Another reason is youth. In terms of median age blacks are six years younger than whites, so a higher proportion of blacks are in their prime childbearing years and a lower proportion are aged. Only 8 percent of blacks are 65 or older, but 13 percent of whites are elderly. By the year 2000 the median age of blacks will be 30 about where the total population was in 1980. Virtually all of the expected increase in the black population during the next couple of decades will be because of - Presidential Yachl May Make Comeback Virginia Kobicheaux Tribune Washington Bureau - The former WASHINGTON presidential yacht, the Sequoia -drummed out of the Navy and sold by President Jimmy Carter in 1977 as too costly a presidential perk -would be returned to the Navy without any expense to taxpayers under a resolution adopted by both the House By ( 'omniuitars unwittingly practiced political pira- ' Whether President Reagan would have taken visiting Russian digrn taries aboard the Sequoia if he'd had it during the ongoing arms negotiations cannot be contemplated Precedents had been set. however. While the growth rate of these two smaller groups is much higher than blacks, neither Hispanics nor Asians are projected to outnumber blacks until well after the turn of the century By any demographic measure, blacks living in the United Statesare not as well off as whites. This is not surprising considering the years of discrimination, but recent trends show some differences are closing. s Since the landmark court cases and legislation of the 1950s and 1960s blacks have made considerable progress in terms of social and economic status. Demographer Reynolds Farley, author of the definitive book on this subject, Blacks and Whites: Narrowing the Gap?" documents this progress and feels that it will continue. Farley points out that while on average American blacks are better off than they ever were in the past, considerable distance needs to be traveled before social equality is achieved January Clearance Savings up to 70 on discontinued models, floor samples, scratched and dented items. civil-right- c 1986 American Demographics Inc, J Incliner sectional in eoeoa or navy action velvet.
