Since his hospitalization, tens of thousands of letters have encouraged the actor, writer, comic to keep fighting for his recovery. Married and divorced three times, most recently from Deborah Denise in 1978, Pryor was charged with finng a gun and ramming his car into another vehicle occupied by two of his wifes fnends on New Years Eve. IN NOVEMBER. 1978, he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of malicious mischief. The gun charge was dropped. He was fined $500 in superior court, ordered to seek psychiatric help and to donate 480 hours to community service or serve four months in jail. IN THE FALL of 1977 he accused NBC of censoring his hour-loncomedy variety series which survived only four weeks on the network. The comedian, whose humor runs largely to racial and social situations, had planned to open his first show facing the camera apparently nude with an optical blur covering his genital area. NBC REFUSED. Pryor called a press conference to show what had been snipped by network censors There followed a series of charges and counter charges which ended in cancellation of The Richard Pryor Show by mutual consent. Pryor served some time in jail and was placed on three years probation in 1974 after pleading guilty to failing to file a federal income tax return. For all his troubles, Pryor remained one of the hottest, most original comedians m show business, his career seemingly unaffected by personal travails. EVEN AS HE confronts the slow and painful processes of skin grafts and plastic surgery to repair the bum damage, two of his new motion pictures await release, "Wholly Moses" and "Stir Crazy." In the past decade Pryor has been absorbed by show business black establishment, starring in comedies for respected directors, most recently for Sidney Poitier in Stir Crazy."
