Andv Pierce of Salt Lake (ltv rolled in a five foot par putt on the first hole of a sudden death plavoff to win the Davis County Amateur golf ( hampionship Saturday Pierce had to birdie the final two holes m regulation play to earn the plavoff spot alongside Bountiful's George Rat kham Pierce drove his tee shot off the first hole in the plajoff and watched anxiously as it settled into a fairway hunker 'T knew I was in real trouble when I saw the hall nearly resting up against the lip, Pierie said afterwards with a smile But I hit a great recovery shot and it saved me The recovery shot he was talking that landed alxiut 20 about was a feet from the hole From there, Pierce chipjied to within five feet and canned the pressure putt Rackham, meanwhile, hit a thunderous tee shot down the right side of the hole He pulled his par 4 second shot ov er the green and chipped to within 3 feet of the hole for an 365-yar- d apparent easy par But that wasnt the case Rackham watched helplessly as the ball went past the hole and with it the championship Pierce sank birdie putts of eight and six feet on his two finishing holes during his regulation round The pin placements today were extremely tough, and the two shotgun starts didnt help any Rackham started his regulation round with a bogey, but remedied that with a four foot birdie putt on the third hole He scrambled to save par at No 7, then proceeded to ram m a eagle on the next hole But perhaps the most disappointed player in the tournament was Ogdens Vance Christ lansen Christiansen was sailing along in easy fashion at 4 under par heading into the final two holes, and appeared on the verge of winning the championship But those two holes proved to be the most troublesome for the Utah State University senior But the championship wasnt in the cards for him on this day Christiansen drove his tee shot down the fairway at No 17 and knocked his second shot just off the edge of the green He tapped his third shot to about eight feet, but his return putt for par rimmed the cup and trickled away several feet He had to settle for a bogey 5 And the bad luck continued Christiansen again lofted his tee shot position, but this time lus approach sailed over the pm and landed several feet off the back side of the m good green Christiansens third shot landed some 10 feet away from the hole and his attempt for par came up short I felt as if I gave the tournament away, Christiansen said dejectedly I missed a lot of easy afterwards shots, but that's the w ay things go some times Pierce nearly didnt make the playoff after shooting a early first round He bogeyed two of three holes on the back side and had to come up with pressure putts on three of the last five holes for birdies Cromwell Grabs Lead Special to The Richard Race Circuit Salt Lake Drag Racer Follows in Fathers Tire Tracks return road as the crew towed the racer back By Dick Rosetta Tribune Sports Writer to the pits In the summer of 1965, Salt Laker Ken Madsen was reveling in he glory of a National Hot Rod Association Division Seven A gas championship at Bonneville Raceway Park His son Mark was sitting in the cockpit of the dragster in victory circle gleefully turning the steering wheel to and fro Earlier in the day, Mark had backed the winning dragster off the trailer as Papa Ken and partner Ron Smith prepared for battle Two years later, young Mark would he at the wheel of the dragster down the So, with racing coursing through his veins in those formative years, it comes as little surprise that Mark Madsen will be in the thick of the Super Pro action next Saturday and Sunday when the annual edition of the NHRA World Championship Senes unfolds at Bonneville at 6555 W 2100 South Its dad that leads the cheers now Mark's the dnv er And hes a good one In the final tuneup for the NHRA Regional, young Madsen whisked to the Sujier Pro 1 title June 21 at Bonnev llle I know Mark has gotten into this because of me. the 43 year-olelder Madsen admitted "There was 1 d never any doubt . from the time he w as five to the time he was eight and sinning the slot car state championship at the Cottonwood Mall He got a trophy for that which was taller than he was Then, he was one of the first high school kids to get seriously involved in the bracket drag program at Bonneville four years agoithat was while Mark was a Cottonwood High student) My wife, Marilyn, and I have never discouraged him because drag racing was good, clean fun for us and it has been fun for him," Ken said Mark, now a successful businessman (he works with tile alongside, naturally, his father), had his first car to tinker with when he was 15 "It was an old. blown-ou- t 1965 Ford Mustang I sold that and got a 1940 Ford pickup on which we rebuilt the engine, chromed it, painted it and sold it to buy a 1928 Model A from Dr George Wilson " The youngster did not let grass grow under any of the wheels Recalls Firs Racer His first racer was the 1940 Ford pickup But that was way too slow I bought a 1970 Dodge Demon from Rex Pcarmain (who was running the Iron Horse" top fueler with Dan Richtns at the time a car which gained national notoriety), and then a faster car, a black Firebird which I raced at Bonneville " But Mark had recurrent thoughts on drag racing and they always centered on that gas dragster his So. when the Econo dragster Dad used to drive came up for sale from Randy Gates, 1 decided it was time that 1 quit driving the same car on the street and on the strip I bought the Econo dragster To go fast in drag rat ing takes patience hard The Econco dragster was work and money introduced to afford guys who werent well heeled the chance to race like the hot dogs in top fuel It was that wav at the start hut now they're going so muih faster (Madsen is at 9 60 and 140 miles per hour for the quarter mile) that it costs a lot of money to keep up ' Mainly, it s just the parts for the engines and transmissions the good pistons cams and hendwork and the intake manifold That s what makes them go fast 1 have a low bucks motor (he calls it a street strip motor') compared to other guys Eve seen guys spend more for their stiect cars than I have in my Fcono dragster Captures First Place A et.
