If youre going to analyze everything in terms of plausibility or credibility, then no fiction script can stand up to that approach, and you wind up doing a documentary. Hitchcock had little interest in that unreliable part erf the motion picture audience he called "the plausibles, people whose imaginations remain rooted perhaps protected is a better word in what they think is plausible or credible. Hitchcock could afford to be haughty about the dimness of the wit of the plausibles. He knew that good movies operate within their own systems of logic. Whether or not its plausible that the spies in The Thirty-Nin- e Steps would have entrusted their secret to the old lady is a question that never comes up as we watch the movie that Hitchcock made. His Thirty-Nin- e Steps moves with such exhilarating speed that to question its plausibility is to betray a fundamental misunderstanding about the nature of certain kinds of films. If a film amuses us, moves us, informs us or shocks us with recognition, the subject of plausibility has been dealt with. Because I was so entertained by Urban Cowboy and fascinated by the way the director, James f Aaron Latham, managed Bridges, and his to turn an old plot into an unusually perceptive satire of one kind of contemporary American life, it never occurred to me to ask the questions about it that were put to me by one of my colleagues. Feisty Young Woman What, she wants to know, does Sissy, the feisty young woman so beautifully played by Debra Winger, do all day, that is, before she nips off to dance all night at Gilleys roadhouse, which is the setting for most of the films action? I must say that I havent a clue. From time to time throughout the movie we see Sissy as she drops by her parents house where she seems to work part-timalthough what she does is never demonstrated. The place looks like some sort of junkyard. It could be that Sissy sells junk, or that she keeps an eye on things while her mother and father go fishing. There are any number of possible answers. Perhaps she goes into the back of the house, puts Cost Fan Tutti on the stereo and spends the day knitting ski sweaters that are sent to New York boutiques where they're labeled as having been imported from Iceland. I dont know what she does all day, but since the movie works so well in every other way Im not worried. Also, Im not worried about the plausibility of John Travolta, who plays a Texas farm boy named Bud, a fellow who comes to Houston to work in a at refinery and, like Sissy, spends all his Gilleys, drinking beer, dancing the Texas two-ste- p and making time with the available partners. Beside the Point Travolta is not your average Madison Avenue idea of a guy who was bom and bred on a Texas farm. Something about the way he looks, the way he sounds and what we know about his earlier career suggest New York City by way of New Jersey, but I would doubt that he has been any closer to Standard Oil than a turnpike gas pump. That, I think, is beside the point of Urban role as a Cowboy in which Travolta, in his real-lif- e movie star, credibly plays what used to be called a Some other actor drugstore cowboy, Texas-styl- e. might be more immediately convincing as Bud, but then Urban Cowboy would lose its associations to rgrg g" ptjk4lAAZ- other movies. It might become too serious, too movie about pointless oppressive, a lives lived in trailer camps, in non-sto-p in jobs that offer no satisfactions. All those things are in this movie, but they are set at a distance by the films story, which is the old one about the boy and the girl who meet, separate and come together again. There are also the trials that must be faced by the young man, one emotional (will "id give himself over to the rich, beautiful Houston socialite who can offer him a and the other physical lifetime supply of (can Bud learn to ride the mechanical bull at Gilleys well enough to win the huge cash prize?). of my youth, the characters in As in the Urban Cowboy appear to have been born 60 seconds before the start of the movie. They have no case histories beyond the information needed to establish their functions in the film. Virtually everything we need to know about these people is contained in how they behave within the film itself. There are no Ibsenian secrets coming out of their pasts to haunt them. They are exactly what they seem to be. This is, admittedly, a pretty simple kind of movie making, but Urban Cowboy" has been enormously enriched by the Intelligence of its screenplay, by the performances and by the observable details of blue-colllife that the camera records without freighting them with social significance, which would be redundant, Its largely because of the excellence of these details that questions of plausibility are, for me, neutralized. Peculiar Universes Some movies, like The Empire Strikes Back, exist beyond the realm of plausibility. Their very lack of plausibility is what they are about and why we go to see them. However, some movies that mean to pass through plausibility into their own peculiar universes never quite make it. Such is The Island, the latest picture to spring from the mind of Peter Benchley. The Island solves the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle by suggesting that the disappearances of all those ships and airplanes are the work of the descendants of 16th century pirates who have successfully hidden out for hundreds of years on an island in the Bahamas that doesnt yet have a resort hotel or a casino on it. There is nothing in the production, directed by Michael Ritchie, to suggest that this conceit would be anything other than silly, even if it had been jotted down on the back of a cocktail napkin. If the lack of plausibility is fatal to The Island, because nothing else in the movie is any good, the abundance of plausibility is almost equally damaging to "Brubaker, the new Robert Redford vehicle, directed by Stuart Tosenberg, about an earnest prison warden who attempts to reform the system and, instead, is raped by it. Brubaker is nothing if not plausible. The prison that Redford takes over is filthy and vile, run by venal officials in league with venal prisoners and venal businessmen.
