He, Suzi Smith and Dwight Rasmussen have put together a two-daseminar to teach the signs of stress and the physical and mental cures for it y So many people are not aware that they're under stress, comments Ms. Smith. "All they know is that theyve got headaches ail the it time, or theyve got ulcers. Sometimes its just lost concentration or a general feeling of depression. All Classic Symptoms Those are classic symptoms of the first stage of burnout, they say. Burnouts the end of the line, mentally and physically, for a person whos been stressed by work, family or his or her own personal flaws. Stress impairs the bodys resistance to disease. Ms. Smith says when a stressed employee calls off sick, chances are he really is sick. But the illness could be avoided. The second stage is social withdrawal or irritability. Who can be friendly when he or she is feeling so lousy? When friends and health are gone, the gradual intellectual decay begins in the third stage. Here is where a person loses concentration, misses deadlines and makes mistakes stupid mistakes. Drugs Look Better Continuing downhill, the person heading for burnout hits the psychoemotion-a- l stage. At that point, drugs and liquor look better and better. Chain smoking adds to the mess many times. At the bottom is the spiritual breakdown or total burnout. Theres nothing left but despair and paranoia.
