Show Direct Tourists can now fly from Israel to Egypt Departures Every Other Thursday by Douglas Watson Baltimore Sun Polynesian Cultural Center and much much more. Deluxe accommodations and meals. Writer CAIRO Anyone planning a trip to Israel or Egypt should consider taking advantage of the new direct flights between Tel Aviv and Cairo to see both countries with much less effort and expense than were required before. A recent El A1 flight to Egypt was stnctly routine from check-i- n at Lod Airport to collecting the luggage at Cairo International Airport, but it was still a thrill for most of those aboard, mainly Americans and Israeli tourists. One of the best things about the flight was its brevity, only 70 minutes in the air, less than the time it takes beforehand at the airport. THE OTHER ATTRACTIVE feature of the direct flights is their cost, about $86 one way, much less than the previous route: flying to Athens and then heading back south to your destination. That route had y effort to move the short distance required an between the former enemy capitals. Flying time will be reduced even further, to about 50 minutes, once Egypt and Israel agree on the specifics of a new corridor going directly over the Sinai. For now, the planes fly a little less directly, more over the Mediterranean Sea. There are four round trips a week between Cairo and Tel Aviv, two flown by El Al. Israels national carrier, and two by Nefertiti Airlines, a company Egypt created especially for this route so that Egypt Air, the national airline, could avoid retaliation from Arab countries hostile to the peace treaty. THE EL AL flights are in the evenings on Monday and Thursday, with about an hour's wait in Cairo before heading home. Nefertiti, following much the same routine, makes round trips Sunday and Wednesday mornings. There are likely to be more flights as the demand increases Since the direct flights were inaugurated, the El Al flights have averaged about 95 percent full, while Nefertiti has filled out about half its seats. Nefertiti Airlines, like El Al, uses a Boeing 707 for the flights. It is chartered from Germany and is flown by a German crew with some Finns among the cabin attendants. ONE REASON NEFERTITI. which is named for the wife of the Eighteen Dynasty Pharoah Amenhotep IV, is less crowded is that the airline is not well known because Egypt does not advertise it. So, if you cannot get on El Al, remember Nefertiti. Via Travel is Nefertitis agent in Israel. Far more Israelis than Egyptians have been Almost no Egyptians are taking the flights. interested, according to Medhat Abu Shaba of Emeco Travel in Cairo. "For them it is a headache, he said, because the Egyptian government insists that Egyptians get a second passport to visit Israel. It is hard to be sure to what extent such red tape is political and how much of it is mere'y the Egyptian habit of making what should be simple more difficult than necessary. THE MAJORITY OF passengers to date seem to be foreign tourists who are taking advantage of the direct flights to see two memorable countries for little more than the price of one. A California woman, for example, flew here from Tel Aviv with three of her children to see the Pyramids, the trip adding only $60 to their excursion fare from Istanbul, where they & cruising the Caribbean. one-pla- BLUE RIBBON TOURS & TRAVEL Ruth Clawson Shields and an excellent staff continue to offer the very finest escorted tours from Salt Lake Call Us For Free Brochure HILL CUMORAH HISTORIC AMERICA & 7 departures beginning July 15 A Tour now live.
