Show r Volunteers needed to house Special Olympic athletes Touring Center in Park City, while the downhill skiing events will be staged at the Three Kings Lift at the Park City Ski Resort. Merrill Osmond, of the world-famous world-famous Osmond Brothers, will make special appearances throughout the weekend. Added entertainment will be provided by -the Sky Dive Club of Ogden. By GARY BLODGETT Sports Editor Volunteer families are still needed need-ed to house some of the several hundred athletes who will be competing com-peting in the Utah Special Olympic Winter Games being staged this week at Park City. . . Nearly 400 mentally retarded children and adults from all over the state will be participating in the two-day event on Friday and Saturday. Satur-day. Housing is needed for Thursday Thurs-day and Friday, according to Lew Fine, housing coordinator. Anyone interested should call him at 649-2690. 649-2690. Chuck Acklin, Winter Games coordinator, said. "Utah Special Olympic Winter Games provides the state's largest program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental retardation. ' He said the Special Olympics was organized in 1970 for year-round year-round programs in 18 sports and made available to more than 2,200 - special athletes 8 years of age and ! - older. j 1 i ; "The program is supported by 1 . approximately 5,000 volunteers and j more than 200 part-time coaches," he said. "It couldn't function without the volunteer Support, including in-cluding those who care for the athletes during the games.' Sheral Schowe, executive director direc-tor of the Special Olympic Winter Games, said athletes will participate in cross-country and downhill skiing ski-ing events.
