Show Taylor Elementary students present patriotic show . ) ( y By JENNIFER PETERSON Staff Writer J.A. Taylor Elementary School students worked hard all term studying stu-dying American history, the Constitution Con-stitution and the Bill of Rights. Last Thursday evening the 500 students presented what they had learned in a program for friends and family at Viewmont High School. The students practiced together for more than 15 hours to present their patriotic program which included in-cluded songs, speeches and essays. The original program, which was written by Ellen Jeppson, was enhanced by the presence of the Utah National Guard Flag Corps and flags loaned for the evening by the city of North Salt Lake. The program began as the entire school sang "America" followed by speeches and musical pieces by smaller groups including a rap of the Bill of Rights. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders competed for the opportunity to speak at the event. Following are three of the winning essays and speeches. Speakers Thursday evening included in-cluded Heidi Linge and Ben Baker, 4th grade; Ryan Bessey, Lavender Biggers and Deborah Gilmore, 5th grade; and Lindsay Jarvis, Aaron Echols and Anna Nichols, 6th grade. Abortion-free dream By LAVENDER BIGGERS Fifth Grade Hi! My name is Lavender Biggers, and I'd like to tell you about my dream. My dream is that abortions will be illegal in America. Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before birth. For years abortion has been an extremely controversial subject Arguments against abortions are based on the belief that an abortion is the unjustified killing of an unborn un-born child. Whether a woman should be permitted by law to have an abortion abor-tion and if so, under what circumstances. cir-cumstances. Now I'd like to tell you a short story. A friend of our family couldn't have a baby so they decided to adopt. This woman found a 17-year-old girl that was pregnant and unmarried. She was going to have an abortion. The friend of our family fami-ly talked to her and told her that she and her husband would love to give the baby a good home. As a result, the girl gave birth to the child, giving giv-ing the baby life and also giving the couple an opportunity to be parents. One out of every six couples can't have children in this country. There are so many good families willing to give loving homes to children, who are apparently not wanted. I believe that abortion is the worst form of child abuse and shouldn't be allowed in a country like ours that believes in "liberty and justice for all." Candy bars or cars Stealing is wrong r By AARON ECHOLS Sixth Grade Hey, Jonny, look here is my favorite candy bar. I'm hungry, besides they won't miss it cause they have high prices on all the other stuff. (He puts it is his pocket.) Come on, let's get out of here! Shoplifting is a type of crime that is done by taking something that is not paid for. Shoplifters steal about $8 billion worth of goods each year. Most people that shoplift do not feel guilty because they think the store does not lose much because of such high prices. One of the reasons why there is so much shoplifting is the way the merchandise is presented to the customer. Most grade school children shoplift small items but no matter what you shoplift, you are committing a crime. Only one out of 1,200 shoplifters get a sentence in jail. So before you take a small candy bar, remember it doesn't matter if it is a candy bar or a car. It's still a crime and crime doesn't pay!! Be like the flag By ANNA NICHOLS, Sixth Grade I have a dream that everyone can be like the colors on the flag and be faithful to our country. Each color represents what we are or what we should be. Now these colors are not what red, white and blue really stand for. These colors are what I think red, white, and blue should stand for. Red red should stand for being be-ing honest Being honest to everyone every-one and to ourselves. That means not committing suicide or taking drugs. White white should mean being clean. Meaning taking care of ourselves and our community. For example no littering or smoking. Blue blue should mean helping help-ing others. There is not enough people helping each other. If there is a little boy who had just scraped his knee, someone should stop and see if he was okay. If there is an old lady who needs help with her groceries, at least take ten minutes of your time and help her cany them home. Now there is one more color I want to emphasis. Gold. It stands for the eagle on top of the flagpole. Gold should stand for being happy. Being happy and living a good life. If everyone was like these colors, no matter what color we are, we would have a better nationeven better than it is today. Eleven-year-olds Brooke Merrell, standing, Camille Perkins and Deborah Gilmore performed a rap of the Bill of Rights at J.A. Taylor Elementary School's tribute to patriotism. Five hundred students practiced songs, speeches and narration for last Thursday's event. (Photo by Jennifer Peterson) |
