Show Qired by the district's board of directors Speed named new So. Davis Fire Chief By JENNIFER PETERSON Staff Writer 4 The South Davis Fire District Board of Directors may have made acting chief Terry Graham's job easier Monday as they named John W. Speed of Aurora, Colo, the new fire chief. Graham temporarily took on the position when former chief Brent Argyle resigned last December. Mayor David H. Wright, Jr., the chairman of the SDFD board, said that,! although the final paperwork has not been signed, he believed Speed was the most qualified applicant for the job. Referring to Speed as "forthright and knowledgeable Wright also expressed express-ed his satisfaction with a person who "presses his issues but does accede to superiors. Speed served as a firefighter and fire chief in Loyola, Calif, before moving to Aurora, Colo., where he now resides. In Aurora, Speed served as chief for approximately approx-imately ten years before becoming a fire consultant. According to board counsel's notes, Speed said he would be "delighted to work for a small department again.' Aurora's fire personnel totals more than 300. i The new fire chief has been hired at a salary of $5,000 more per year than former chief Argyle. This, Wright said, is justified by Speed's qualifications and experience. One of many issues the new chief will have to address ad-dress is the future of Argyle. "Brent Argyle is still employed by the fire district. Now it's up to the new chief what will happen to him, Wright said. If Speed accepts his contract, he will begin his job on March 2. |
