Show ADVERTISEMENT Business Review The Jungle offers love, education and workouts By JAMS STUART Staff Writer Building self-esteem is an uphill battle, but, especially tough for any child that does not exactly fit the image of the perfect, petite, pre-teen. LaVon Johnson saw the struggle her own daughter was having and jumped at the opportunity oppor-tunity to help her and other children like her. With the able assistance of Ryan Johnson and Dan Bishop, the Jungle was created. The Jungle is a place for overweight kids who have had their fill of being left out of things, not being able to keep up with everyone and getting teased. teas-ed. The Jungle, at 266 E. Pages Lane, is a club these children can join where they will receive love, encouragement, education and workouts. The club offers a fun, productive produc-tive place for children to go every day after school, where they meet with good, understanding understan-ding friends, and gain confidence con-fidence in themselves. The founders of Jungle are there to help these kids take off pounds and have a fun time. There will be no diet. There will be no big equipment, just three energetic people teaching kids to choose the right foods and to turn off the television and exercise. exer-cise. The participants are motivated through rewards in the form of gifts and prizes. The instructors will be involved in the play with them, helping them enjoy their exercises and games. The first 20 minutes of each session will be a class situation where club members will talk about feelings and self-esteem, nutrition and burning calories. ' 'The rest of the session will be a blast," stated Mrs. Johnson. Ryan Johnson and Dan Bishop are college students who love and care about children. They are both from large families and can relate to any age child. They share Mrs. Johnson's concern that there are too many kids that are losing interest in-terest in activity. They are also patient and full of ideas. For the past 12 years Mrs. Johnson has been teaching singing sing-ing to the Back Yard Kids.
