Some arrests have actually been made while calls are still in progress, the manager reported. In addition to the annoyance call cases, there have been 34 telephone-related arrests and 27 convictions for offenses such as coin larceny, toll fraud and theft of telephone equipment. According to the local manager mana-ger for Mountain States Telephone Tele-phone Co., a total of 48 annoyance an-noyance callers were arrested during the first 11 moonths of this year. Of that number, 34 were convicted. Throughout 1967, there were 16 arrests and 16 convictions. First offenders in annoyance call cases are subject to a fine of $299 and-or six months in jail. Second offences are felonies fel-onies and subject to maximum penalties of $1,0000 and-or three years in prison. Annoyance calls range from pranks to obscenities to threats. When calls are of a serious nature, na-ture, victims are urged to report re-port the incidents to police who, in turn, request help from the phone company. Manager said most annoyance annoy-ance calls do not require police or telephone .company action. Persons who receive prank calls are advised to hang up immediately. If calls persist, however, and |
