Show Tribute paid gridders, cmhes David Olsen SHS Athletic Reporter satisfactorily. Last year we were able to put a kick into our defense and this year we kept our potent offense and added a great defense. The defensive line was one of During the last nine weeks the people of this town have notived a marked change in the type of football played at Springville High School. This has been a new thing for the people of Springville a winning win-ning football team. Not only was the team a winning one, it was also a very exciting team to watch. During the season the team scored 124 points to the opponents op-ponents 118. The team also tied for second place in the southern south-ern division race being second only to Payson who is ranked fourth in the state. In overall offense and defense we took fourth in the region which, this year has proved to be one of the best regions in the state. We cannot praise our boys enough. They turned out two weeks before school rtarted and went through grueling two-a-day practices as they prepared for the season. Under the able leadership of head coach Mike Jacobsen, assisted as-sisted by Bill Metton and Hal Jensen the team progressed the best, if not the best, in the region. Every team found the going tough against our line which consisted of Lawrence Groneman, Steven Averett, John Clark, Don Conrad, Paul Wheeler, Max Roper, David Selman, Rich Patten and Ben Gardner. Backing up our line was our defensive backfield men who consisted of Wayne Hall, Neil Hanks, Robert Bailie, Bai-lie, Kenny Averett, Stuart Hamilton, Sherl Miner and Randy Thorn. Our defensive backfield suffered the greatest amount of injury. In our game with Orem we were missing three of our players from the backfield. We had a potent offensive attack which opened up gapping gap-ping holes for the backs and the men on the line responsible for this included John Clark, Paul Wheeler, Don Conrad, Steve Averett, Max Roper and Brad Walker. The ends did a good job of downfield b'ocking and a good job on pass recep-tins. recep-tins. Our ends were Sherl Miner, Mi-ner, Raymond Felix, and Rick Patten. Backfield men included includ-ed Paul Blanchard, Dave Selman, Sel-man, Kenny Averett, Stan Weight and Wayne Hall. For the first time in many years, a reliable place kicker in Steve Averett who also handled the kick-offs was a dependable point getter. Our punters, Lawrence Groneman and Stuart Hamilton also did a commendable job. Special recognition should go to Kenny Averett who was selected se-lected as prep player of the week after the BY High game. Thanks goes to our captains, Dave Selman and Don Conrad for their great leadership ability abil-ity as well as playing ability on the field. We would like to thank the best coaches in the state for their patience and diligence dil-igence Coach Jacobsen for his work with the backs; Coach Mitton for his work with the line and Coach Jensen Jen-sen for his work with the ends. These coaches have introduced introduc-ed a new era of football at Springville High and we are sure that under the leadership of Coach Jacobsen, the team is destined for greater things in the future. |
