Show Theater Students Honored With Awards Outstanding Contribution,. Lower Division-David McMurtrie, a freshman from Salt Lake City, who has appeared as El Remendado in "Carmen", and in the melodrama "Little Mary and the Rangers". He has done special effects for "Blithe Spirit", worked as technical director for "Androchles and the Lion", and will be drama club historian n next year. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. McMurtrie, 5051 Woodmont Street, Salt Lake, and is a 1979 graduate of Cottonwood High School. Outstanding Contribution, Upper Division--Marc Deaton, the son of Mrs. H elen Van Sickle, Elko, Nevada. Deaton played roles as Sylvious in "As You Like It" and Don Jose in the music department opera "Carmen". In addition, the SUSC junior was promotions supervisor for "Working" and "Dial 'M' for Murder", box office manager for "As You Like It", costume designer for "Blithe Spirit" and vocal and movement coach for "Androchles and the Lion". Outstanding Contribution, Lighting and Sound-Todd Ross for sound in "Working" and "Dial 'M' for Murder". The son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Ross, 287 East 1120 South, Sandy, is a 1978 graduate of. Jordan High School, and is a freshman theater arts major at SUSC. A student from San Jose, California, has been recognized for overall contribution in theater arts, and students from Brigham City and Salt Lake have won unprecedented honors as three time winners in scenic design and costuming at Southern Utah State College. Dale B. Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. Keith Young, 2775 Custer Drive, San Jose, received the coveted award i for overall achievement in ; theater arts at a recent, drama club awards banquet. Elaine Kelbch, daughter of Mrs. Lucille R. Kelbch, Salt Lake City, and Mark : Baird, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Baird, Brigham City, won third time awards for costuming and scenic design for the fall quarter production "Dial 'M' for Murder". Young is a 1974 graduate of Hurricane High School. : The SUSC junior has worked in all aspects of the theater this year, appearing as Dr. Bradman in "Blithe Spirit," : as Escamillo in the opera "Carmen," and playing ; musical roles in the musical j "Working". : In addition, he has worked ! as the technical director for ; "Carmen", and as a ' designer-technician for the drama club spook alley. : Young and another 1 student, David B. Howard, . have revitalized the Red ; Cliff Repertory Theater in Kanab, and he will work as ; the technical director for the theater this summer. The award recipient will be employed by the theater department next year, having . been awarded an assistantship in stage management. Ms. Kelbch is a senior at SUSC, a 1974 graduate of Granger High School. She won the award for outstanding out-standing contribution in costumes last year for "Ah, Wilderness!" and the year before for SUSC production of "A Doll's House" and : "Scandles". Baird will graduate from SUSC May 30 with honors. He will enter Purdue University this fall to earn a ; MFA in stage design. The 1975 graduate of Box Elder J High School received the award for outstanding ; contribution in scenery and paint last year for "Stop the : World I Want to Get Off", and the year before for "Shenandoah". At the annual theater awards banquet, the 1980-81 theater season was an- : nounced. Fred C. Adams will direct "Pippin" and "The Wiz". Gary M. Mclntyre will direct "Angel Street" and R. Scott Phillips will direct "The Belle of Amhearst" and "The Cherry Orchard". "Beauty and the Beast" will be directed by Sandra Stiglinski. Assistantship for the coming year were also announced, with the following students being employed by the theater department: Jennifer Riggs, Riverton; Keven Cutler, Sunset; Sherrie Lee Hunt, David C. Maxwell, Todd Ross and David McMurtrie, Salt Lake City; Mark B. Blackham, St. George; Shauna Lawrence, Tooele; David Johnson, Hurricane; Marjorie Snyder, Moab; and Robin Murdock, Delta. Out-of-state students receiving assistantships include Rick Dominguez, Michael Gossard and Theresia Karpie, Las Vegas; Dale B. Young, San Jose; David B. Howard, Tucson, Arizona; and Marie Del Marco, Amarillo, Texas. Other outstanding con-tribvution con-tribvution and achievement awards for the 1979-80. campus-community celebration of "Twenty Years of Great Theatre" include: Best Actress-Linda S. Nelson for her role as Madame Arcati in "Blithe Spirit". Ms. Nelson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Nelson, Ogden, is a 1976 graduate of Ogden High School. She will graduate May 30 with a BA in theater arts. Best Actor-David B. Howard for his performance in Orlando in "As You Like It". Howard, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Howard, 2033 South Camino Seco, Tucson, is a SUSC junior, a 1974 graduate of Santa Rita High School, Tucson. Best Supporting Actress-Cara Actress-Cara Thorup for her role as Celia in "As You Like It". She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard M. Thorup, 1876 West 13400 South, Riverton, and is a 1978 graduate of Bingham High School. She is a sophomore at SUSC majoring in communications com-munications and theater arts. Best Supporting Actor-Peter Actor-Peter Simpson Cook as Corin in "As You Like It". Cook will graduate from SUSC May 30 with honors, receiving a BA in theater arts. The 1972 graduate of Viewmont High School, Bountifu, has won several theater awards while at SUSC, the last in 1978-79 for scenery and paint for "Rashomon", |
