Show Scholar athlete named Mary Damiani, a regional winner in the 800 meter run and a member of the gymnastics team, was named Southern Utah State College's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference 1979-80 Scholar-Athlete Tuesday at the annual athletic awards banquet. Damiani, a junior from Chicago Heights, Illinois, was also recipient of the outstanding female track athlete. Awards were made to outstanding athletes in each of SUSC's six varsity sports for men and five varsity sports for women at the banquet held at the Sugar Loaf Cafe. A special certificate of appreciation was also presented to Dr. Ross Mc-Naught, Mc-Naught, Cedar City orthopedic or-thopedic surgeon for his services to the athletic department during the year. : Athlete of the year awards were presented to John Lundstrom, football; Robert Shirts, track; Keith Seals, wrestling; Kevin Averett, golf; Chris Whetton, volleyball; Carolyn Dodds, women's basketball; Damiani, women's track; Debbie Johnson, gymnastics; gym-nastics; Dave Knudsen, men's basketball; Tony Pappas, baseball. Other football awards went to Phil Howa, outstanding out-standing offensive player; Lane Martino, outstanding defensive player; Bob Martin, most inspirational player; and Lane Martino, Kodak Ail-American award. Keith Seals, received mention as an honorable mention all-American wrestler. Most improved awards went to Lori Mott in volleyball and Denise Long in basketball. Mr. Hustle recognition was given Johnny Pappas in baseball and Russ Ha fen in basketball. Don Gubler was named the baseball team's outstanding pitcher, and Bret Bell was honored as the outstanding defensive basketball player. In addition, a number of all-conference and all-NAIA District Seven awards were made in various sports. V |
