'- "Real" Fire Drill at Pa rowan High PAFOWAN - If these students s seem a little unconcerned with their very serious looking injuries, its because they were a part of a surprise fire drill at PHS and the burns and cuts and bruises were makeup very skillfully applied by some experts from SUSC assisting PHS Drama Coach Nancy Wilson. The fire drill was held Monday afternoon by the PHS PTA. They were very abley assisted by fire chief Albert Orton and his crew and an ambulance crew. The Parowan City Police and Ira Schoppmann and Gary Schatzer of the Sheriff's Department also assisted. The drill was planned to surprise the students and teachers to evaluate the reactions to an emergency situation. Smoke bombs were placed in the vents to simulate a real fire and the alarm was sounded at the school and the fire station. The school was evacuated and fake injuries, were carried out, including a heart attack victim. The county school nurse LaFawn Robinson, was at the school and assisted with the burn victims and other emergencies. Principal Bowler sounded the alarm and participted in evaluation hearings Tuesday at the School. They felt the drill was very successful in helping plan for future emergencies. The students were orderly and no panic was observed, there were some areas however, that will be worked on such as moving students further from the grounds to a safer area and not crowding around the injured as they are being moved to ambulances. ' The PTA under the direction of Mrs. Sandra Slack wish to extend their thanks to the members of the fire department, police department and Sheriff's department for helping so much to make the "fire" seem so real. It was an excellent test for the school in emergency situation reactions. |
