Show Weights and Measures Week Proclaimed Weights and Measures Week has been proclaimed March 1 - 7 by Scott M. Matheson, Governor of the State of Utah, to honor Weights and Measures officials of-ficials in the state who protect the public interest by assuring accuracy in all commercial weights and measures transactions. The "Week" is an annual event commemorating the first United States Weights and Measures Law signed on March 2, 1799. It is observed in hundreds of communities across the nation by State Weights and Measures officials of-ficials in cooperation with the Scale Manufacturers Association. "Weights and Measures is Consumer Protection" has been chosen as the theme for the 1980 observance of National Weights and Measures Week. According to Dr. Kenneth B. Creer, Commissioner of Agriculture, "This year's theme is especially appropriate ap-propriate in light of the heavy impact inflation is having on everything the consumer buys. Thousands of man hours are expended each year by our department's depart-ment's Weights and Measures officials to examine, test, and check-weigh check-weigh items offered to the consumer." The Weights and Measures Section has officials of-ficials on duty throughout the year whose job is to insure the accuracy of all weighing and measuring devices in commercial use. In addition to the thousands of weighing devices checked annually, many thousands of prepackaged items are checked for proper labeling and content. Also checked are bulk items sold, such as coal, concrete, liquid petroleum, and gasoline -including the octane rating. According to Edison Stephens, Supervisor of the Weights and Measures Section, "Merchants as well as consumers benefit from the Weights and Measures program since an inaccurate scale can operate either way - against the buyer or against : the seller." Utah consumers and merchants are encouraged to support their Weights and Measures officials this week, and all year long.
