Show Lady T-birds end Season at BYU An ambitious challenge of Division I power Brigham Young University will close the season for the Southern Utah State College women's basketball team. The Thunderbirds will meet the Cougar women Thursday at Provo in a preliminary to a BYU men's game. "Quite simply," SUSC Coach Joy Peterson explains "if we play poorly against them, we'll get blown away." Of most concern to the Thunderbirds is the two-pronged two-pronged BYU attack which features ail-American Tina Gunn (6-5 center) and super sophomore Jackie Beene (6-1 (6-1 guard-forward). "Gunn currently averages 30 points, and she is shooting for a national scoring title. We are also very worried about how to contain Jackie; she's 6-1 and quick and agile enough to play guard. She has super speed," Peterson says. As a team, BYU averages 85 points while holding opponents op-ponents to 75 points. The Cougars have been nationally rated among division one schools. SUSC split a pair of home games last week, losing to Adams State (69-56) before nipping Fort Lewis (66-64). The home loss eliminated the T-Birds from any consideration con-sideration for a divison two district playoff berth. It also dropped their RMAC record to 4-4 and their overall mark to 10-11 starting this week's play. Chris Tea (6-1 senior center) and Susan Pedersen (5-8 senior forward) lead SUSC scoring with averages of 16.5 and 12.6 points respectively. Tea is the top rebounder (12.8) per-game, with Carolyn Dodds (7.6) and Rosemary Jacklin (7.1) providing good backup on the boards. SUSC finished the RMAC season in fourth place in the five-team league. Finishing ahead of the 'Birds wsere Mesa, Western State and Adams State. Winless Fort Lewis finished in last place. "We haven't played nearly to our potential recently," Peterson says. "We'll have to do much better to offer much challenge to a fine BYU. team." |
