Show SUSC host RMAC Gymnastic Meet Adams State College will be the team favorite when four Rocky Mountain Conference gymnastics teams meet for the conference con-ference title Saturday morning at Southern Utah State College. The conference meet will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Physical Education Building gymnasium on campus. Admission will be free. Competing will be Adams State, University of Southern Colorado, Western State, and SUSC. "Adams State is the defending conference champion, and they'll be the people to beat again this year," Kathryn Berg, SUSC gymnastics coach, says. "We are also looking for Southern Colorado to be plenty tough." SUSC finished third in the RMAC meet a year ago. Competition will be held in vaults, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. In addition all-around all-around awards will be presented. A heavy favorite to win the all-around title is Adams State's Kim Buron. A number of other women are given an outside chance to upset Buron. They include Marti Harding, USC; Leane Bennett and Claudia Mizer, Western State; Debbie Johnson and Janet Howell, SUSC and Virginia Adams, Adams State. "Because of a number of circumstances, we haven't been able to compete in nedarly as many meets as we'd prefer," Beg explains. "As a result, we are still not certain how well we will compare with the other conference schools. We do know, however, that we are showing fconsiderable progress in our practices." Scheduled to compete for SUSC are Johnson, Pahrump, Nevada; Howell, WEst Jordan; and Mary Damiani, Chicago Heights, Illinois, in the all-around. Competing in floor exercise will be Leslie Edwards, Las Vegas, Nevada; Darlene French, Salt Lake City; Donna Gilbert, Heber City; G'Ne McEldowney, Mecosta, Michigan; and Effie Sorensen, Cedar City. Specializing on the bars are DeAnn Clark, Monroe, French, Gilbert and Sorensen. Vaulting will be Edwards, and entrants on the balance beam will be Gilbert and McEldowney. |
