Show TimberCutting results in Fines The unauthorized cutting of timber on the Dixie National Forest has resulted in fines levied against two men with one also receiving a jail sentence. Carlton Strickland, 32, of Las Vegas, Nev. pled guilty in U.S. Magistrate Court to cutting live trees without a permit. U.S. Magistrate Patrick H. Fenton, fined Strickland $75.00. Thirty-one year old Ken E thing ton of Leeds, Utah, was found guilty of cutting standing snag trees which was not authorized by his commercial firewood permit. The dead snags are of value as wildlife habitat and the cutting of those snags is not allowed on portions of the Dixie National Forest. Ethington's permit was specifically limited to dead and down material only. U.S. Magistrate Fenton fined Ethington $150.00 and sentenced him to 30 days in the Sevier County Jail. Stay of execution on trie jail sentence was given until March 18. Both actions occurred in U.S. Magistrate Court in Cedar City on February 22. |
