Show ASKS THAT HIGHWAYS BEREPAIREB Secretary of Salt Lake Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce Says Poor Conditions of Utah : Roads Causes Travel Loss ; L-: (Descret News) Explaining that coast states are routing thousands of tourists tour-ists away from Utah because of bad roads, Gus P. Backman, alt Li.Ke chamber of commerce secretary, Monday outlined a proposal to have the state spend $1,000,000 to improve the two main cross highways, thereby aiding unemployment as well as increasing travel. The proposal was made in the form of a report to the chamber cham-ber of commerce board of governors gov-ernors following Mr. Backman's return from an extended tour of the Tacific coast. The chamber's board of governors gov-ernors approved the proposal submitted by Secretary Back-man, Back-man, and referred the question to the highways committee, with . instructions that the committee take the necessary action to have the proposal effected. The plan, as outlined by the secretary, asks the state road commission to anticipate revenue from the gasoline tax to the extent ex-tent of about $1,000,000 to immediately im-mediately improve stretches of the main roads which cross Utah east and west and north and south. Mr. Backman estimates that there are about 100 miles on highway 91 leading southwest to Los Angeles. 50 miles on Xo. 40-50 to Wendover and San Francisco, and 30 miles on the Lincoln east that are badly in need of improvement.
