Show Utah farmers hurt by floods Farmers across the stale spent a frantic week trying to repair breaks in irrigation systems. Flood damage to canals was reported from Sevier and Millard Counties on the south, to the Idaho border on the north. Flooding continues to spread along the Bear River and in the Uintah Basin, according accor-ding to the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Hay harvest was active in most counties, with first cutting near the one-third mark. A few reports pointed to a good first crop, but most expressed express-ed concern about weeds, winter kill, and weevil. Statewide, the crop will be below normal in both yield and quality. quali-ty. In addition, early cut fields were hit by rain, resulting in even more loss of quality and tonnage. Small grains made good progress during the week, even though development develop-ment continued behind normal. Winter wheat was early two-thirds headed, and barley about 20 percent. Corn rates only fair because of late planting and, in some cases, poor stands. |
