Union toppled Casey Oetinger led off for the Wasps with a ground out in the bottom of the seventh and Cramer retired Budd for the second out on a one-handed catch of a pop fly. Call was walked and motored to second on a wild pitch. Young flied out -when a Union baseballer performed a one-handed catch for the out. The Cougars scored five runs with two outs in the top of the eighth inning for a 6 to 1 advantage. Kary Brown and Eldredge grounded out, but Mike Ross gained a walk with two outs. Jim Trowbridge reached first base on an error er-ror by Wasatch's third baseman and Lonnie Sammaripa singled in Ross to give the Cougars a 2 to 1 lead. Trowbridge moved to second base, A passed ball advanced Sammaripa to second base and Trowbridge to third. A single by Cramer knocked in Trowbridge and Sammaripa to increase the Cougar lead to three runs at 4-1. Fausett was walked and Anderton ripped a single to send home Cramer and Fausett with a 6-1 lead. Anderton also received a blow-to blow-to the head as the infielder's throw to the bag connected with Anderton's head instead in-stead of the first baseman's mitt. Ander-. ton recovered and was not injured. Nielsen grounded out to end the inning. It appeared that the Cougars had the game won because of their five run lead and they were only two outs away from a win when Kohler flied out. Wes Oetinger singled, but Hiatt struck out to place Union one out away from a win. Hiatt singled to keep the Wasps' hopes alive. Wasatch's Hiatt stole second and Oetinger dashed to third base. Christensen was walked to load up the bases. Wasatch had Oetinger and Budd on the base paths and the potential game tying run came to the plate in Bruce Lovlass. However, Eldredge was replaced on the mound by Sammaripa and after two balls, the Union hurler blazed three strikes by Lovlass to deliver a 6 to 4 triumph to the Cougars. Lovlass watched watch-ed the third strike sail by. Ross and Trowbridge committed outs for the Cougars in the top of the first, but Sammaripa singled. However, Cramer struck out. Young was retired in the bottom bot-tom of the first inning on a great diving catch by Mike Acord. but Mike Olsen. a sophomore on the mound for Union, ran into trouble as he walked Kohler and Oetinger. but he got out of a jam as Burgener grounded into a doubleplay from Sammaripa to Acord. , Union went down one. two. three in the top of the second as Wayne Gingell struck out. Anderton grounded out and Acord whiffed for the final out. Olsen turned on the heat in the bottom of the second as he struck out Hiatt. Christensen and Casey Oetinger. The Cats were shutout in the third inning, in-ning, but they had one base runner. Kary Brown and Olsen struck out. but Ross was walked. However. Trowbridge struck out to end the inning. - ... Acord turned in some outstanding catches in the second game with Wasatch. ,:Tl Five run eruption produces envrci inning win vor Union ' The Union Cougars captured first place in Region 9 with a perfect mark of 6-0, but win number six didn't come easy as the baseballers from Roosevelt had to go two extra innings before they were able to knock off the Wasatch Wasps in Roosevelt Wednesday, 6 to 4. Union grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning in the second game of a doubleheader against Wasatch when Kenny Anderton led off with a homer. The next three batters in the inning. Rick Nielsen, Shane Neilsen and Bryan Eldredge were retired one. two, three. Wasatch scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie up the contest at 1-1 and send it into extra innings. Kohler struck for a double with a 3-2 count and a free pass to Oetinger placed men on first and second. Another walk to Burgener loaded up the bases. A sacrifice fly by Hiatt drove in Kohler and knotted up the game at 1-1. Christensen delivered a shot to Lonnie Sammaripa, Union's shortstop and he forced out the runner at second and fired the ball to first base for a doubleplay. A failure to get the ball in time to first base for the doubleplay would have resulted in a triumph for Wasatch as Oetinger was standing on home plate. So due to the doubleplay. the game was forced into extra ex-tra innings. The first batter in the top of the seventh inning for the Cougars. Brett Cramer grounded out. but Bardett Fausett received a walk. Fausett was forced out at second and Anderton reached reach-ed first base on a fielder's choice. Rich Hadlock came in as a runner for Anderton. Ander-ton. Hadlock stole second and reached third base on an overthrow. Hiatt tried to move to third, but was nailed at the bag for the second out. Oetinger flied out to end the inning. The Cougars scored one run in the top of the fifth inning, but Wasatch was blanked in the bottom of the fifth. Budd was walked, but was tagged out at second se-cond base on a perfect throw from cat-; cat-; cher Anderton to Sammaripa. Young flied out to end the inning. Union was blanked in the top of the sixth as Ross and Sammaripa struck oui and Trou bridge grounded out. The Wasps scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Union scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Wasatch team scored three counters in the bottom of the eighth, but lost to Union by two runs. A home run by Anderton gave Union a 1-U lead in the top of the fifth inning and a single by Anderton in the top of the eighth inning increased Union's lead to three runs. "I just swung away. Sammaripa knocked in Ross in the top of the eighth to deliver a one run lead of 2 to 1 to the Cats. "I was up there with two outs and I had to hit the ball. I hit it up the gap between second and third. It was basically our toughest game of the year," said Sammaripa. Ross crossed home plate in the top of the eighth and scored Union's second run for a 2-1 lead. "I hadn't been hitting well so I had to get on base somehow. I was pretty happy that I walked cause I had been having trouble at the plate." said Ross. "I moved to second on a hit and run. Trowbridge got it on the ground and Sammaripa drove me in. He got the ball by the third baseman and I scored." A single by Cramer knocked in two runners and increased Union's lead to five runs and it proved to be the winning hit as Wasatch scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut Union's winning win-ning margin to two runs. " I felt like I needed a hit at a crucial time. We needed need-ed the runs to win the game and I connected con-nected for a base hit. I knew this would be the right time to get a base hit." stated Cramer. 1-3 Union's coach Brent Fieldstedremait-ed, Fieldstedremait-ed, "We got some clutch hitting.
